Herman Albertini
September 17, 1922
December 11, 2012
Herman "Al" Andrew Albertini entered into the arms of his Heavenly Father on Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2012 at Reno's Life Care Center on So. Virginia Street. Al was born at home in Staunton, Ill. Sep. 17, 1922 to Albert and Virginia (nee Mosco) Albertini. He attended St. Michael's Catholic School through the eighth grade and graduated from Staunton High School. He attended several semesters at Washington University in St. Louis, Mo. and when WWII was declared he joined the Army Air corps as a Cadet and graduated Aug. 5, 1942, six weeks before his 20th birthday - a date he never forgot!
During the war he was stationed in the South Pacific, Australia and North Africa. His favorite plane to fly was the Lightning P-38 Fighter.
After the war he was Chief Pilot for a General Allen and later Operations Supervisor for South American Airlines based in Puerto Rico. He later flew eleven years for American Airlines and for the Holly Corporation. Al loved flying but agreed with the then mandatory retirement age of 60 for commercial pilots.
He once was asked if ever offered a chance to ride along on a shuttle to the moon, he replied, "In a heartbeat!" Al was pre-deceased by his parents, and older sister, Elizabeth Charley. Survivors include his 95 year old sister, Pauline Haase Oskaloosa, Kan.; and his wife of 29 years, Jean Nielsen Thomas Albertini of Gardnerville. Sons, Gary of Leucadia, Calif., Ron and companion, Christine Freseman of Whitmore, Calif.; daughter, Lori Boland, and grand-daughter, Cassidy Boland of Studio City, Calif. Step-son, Brian Thomas and wife Susan of Richland, Wash.; step-son, Brent "Skip" Thomas and wife, Cynthia of Shingle Springs, Calif. and step-daughter, Bonnie Thomas of Berkeley, Calif.; step-grand-daughter, Bethany German of New Orleans, La.; step-grandson, Kyle Thomas and wife, Monica of Albany, N. Y.; step-great-granddaughters, Cassidy Thomas Steele of Shinge Springs, and Anne-Marie Thomas of Albany, N.Y.; also several nephews and great-nieces.
Al met his wife, Jean in Sacramento, Calif. in 1981 where they lived until 1991 when they built their "dream cabin in the mountains" in Northern California in Old Station on highway 44 half-way between Susanville, Calif. and Redding, Calif.
A glorious ten years of retirement until the winter snow shoveling got to be too tiring for Al and he chose the beautiful Carson Valley which became his final home in Gardnerville for eleven years.
Al was placed on Vista Care Hospice in May of 2012 and Jean continued to care for him at home.
A Celebration of Life will be held 11 a.m. Saturday Jan. 12 at Trinity Lutheran church, 1480 Douglas Ave in Gardnerville directly behind the former Two Guys From Italy Restaurant on Hwy 395 and Mill Street with a light lunch following in the Parish Hall.
In lieu of flowers, any memorials may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church, Vista Care Hospice of Carson City or "No Place Like Home Senior Care of Gardnerville".
Al's cremation was handled by the Neptune Society of Reno.
