Dorothy Gerlean Mosey

Dorothy Mosey, age 82, passed peacefully on Friday, February 1, 2013, at Long Beach VA Medical Center. She was born to the late Wallace and Blanche Kirkpatrick in Greenville MO, on December 17, 1930. She had a full life as wife and mother of seven children.
She graduated from High School, in Greenville, joined the U.S. Air Force
and was married in 1953. Dotty survived polio in 1955 after the birth of her second child and went on to have 5 more children. She passionately enjoyed dancing, was a member of a square dance troupe and expertly danced in her wheelchair. She continued as a loving, hard working single mother with 5 children at home when she divorced in 1979. She suffered additional paralysis, in 1989, when she battled the effects of Post Polio, resulting in her reliance on respiratory ventilation to survive. She was a strong willed, courageous woman who overcame a lifetime of struggles and never let life's hardships get her down.
She represented Nevada in Washington D.C., in 1976, when she was appointed Miss Wheelchair Nevada. In the seventies, she advocated for the disabled community and while attending UNR she was instrumental in improving accessibility on campus. She was an activist for independent living and supported the start up of the Independent Living Center in Reno.
She is survived by her sister Hazel Pople and children: Greg and Debbie Mosey, Gerlean Mosey, Jennifer E. Mosey, Joe and Karen Peters, Chris Mosey, Julie Gardner, Paulette Mosey, fifteen grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.
