Everett "Ev" Helwick, 73 of Reno passed away from cancer on August 17th at Life Care Center in Reno.
Ev was born on Aug 17, 1940 in Lela, OK to Bill and Marie. He moved to the Fresno area with his family at 2 weeks old. He graduated from Orosi HS in 1959 & immediately joined the Naval reserves. Soon after the Navy, he joined the Air Force and was stationed in Glasgow, MT, where he met his wife Patty Clemow.
After leaving the Air Force, Patty and Ev, moved to Sacramento, where he was a foreign car mechanic for several years. After spending a few years in Sacramento, he moved his family to Carson City and while continuing his career in mechanics Ev became involved in off road racing.
Once he left the auto mechanics business he became a Slot Technician for several businesses in Elko and Reno area. He was also sent to Caribbean as the head of the Slots department, where he helped to open up a new casino in St. Martin. Once the casino was finished he moved back to Reno, where he lived until his death. Ev retired after 35 years in the slot machine business. While living in Elko, Ev helped to organize the local "Clampers" chapter in the area. He stayed involved with the org. until his passing. He loved sports and enjoyed RVing, fishing, hunting as well as being an avid Wolf Pack, 49er and Raider fan. Ev also had an extensive collection of John Wayne and Ducks Unlimited memorabilia.
Ev is survived by his wife of 52 years Patty of Reno, daughter Tammy Parkinson of Alturas, CA as well as his two granddaughters Desiree Reyes of Reno and Danielle Reyes who is currently in Pensacola FL. as a sailor in the Navy. He is also survived by his three sisters, Donna Demeree of Orange Cove, CA, Geraldine Greenwood of Sacramento and Carol Baker of Cool, CA, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his 4 brothers, Jimmy, Gerald, Billy and Ronnie Helwick all of CA.
Memorial Services will be held on September 20th from 2-4pm at Final Wishes Funeral Home located at 437 Stoker Avenue, in Reno.
