Marvin Lee Wholey passed away on July 25, 2013 at the age of 82.
A native Nevadan, Marvin was born in Reno to Clarence and Catherine Wholey. He spent his early years in the Reese River, Austin and Fallon areas and resided in Reno the rest of his life except for a few years in San Francisco and 3 years in the U.S. Marine Corps
. He completed his 3 year tour of duty with the Marines on November 20, 1949 with the rank of Sergeant. On April 8, 1950 he and Christina Copenhaver, a Fallon resident, we're married in Reno.
Marvin began his 40+ year financial services career on April 1, 1955 as Assistant to the Treasurer of Reno based Union Federal Savings and Loan Association. He left Union Federal in 1963 to accept an appointment by The Honorable Governor Grant Sawyer as Deputy Commissioner of Savings Associations. In December of 1964 Governor Sawyer elevated Marvin to the position of Nevada Commissioner of Savings Associations. In 1967 he accepted the position of Financial Analyst with the Federal Home Loan Bank of San Francisco where he later served on the Board of Directors of that bank. His final move was back to where he started to accept a management position with Union Federal (American Federal Savings Bank) where he rose to President, Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer.
Marvin left high school in his sophomore year (1946) to join the Marines on a 3 year enlistment plan. He finished high school through correspondence study and night school while in the service. He graduated from Churchill County High School and the University of Nevada with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration. A Trustee Emeritus of the University of Nevada Foundation , he served as trustee of that organization from 1987 through 1994. Over the years Marvin served as trustee, director, president and/or member of 37 different national, state and local civic, fraternal and trade organizations.
His mother, father and 3 sisters preceded him in death. Surviving wife of 63 years, Christina; daughters: Donna Wholey and Kathy Wholey Redding (Marty); grandchildren: Hannah, Jacob and Eric Redding (Phonisha), Kellie Schield Lee (Erik), Ryan Schield (Shelley), and Lisa Schield Gallagher (Dylan); great-grandchildren: Brynn Gallagher and Connor Gallagher, Ahilana Redding and Samara Redding, and Wyatt Reviglio; sisters: Doris Dix, Evelyn Corker (Rob) and brother Byron, together with several nieces and nephews.
