A celebration of life for Michael Robert Martinez, a reporter
and editor for 12 years at the Reno Gazette-Journal, will be held at 12:30 p.m. Sunday, March 10 in the Terrazzo Room of the Siena Hotel-Casino in downtown Reno. Martinez died January 2, 2013 of a stroke. He was 59. Born December 16, 1953 in Chicago, Martinez attended Columbia University.
After graduating from the University of Southern California, he worked for several major entertainment publications, including the Hollywood Reporter and Cash Box.
His gift for writing was evident during the years he covered K-12 education at the Reno Gazette-Journal, but his love of music and the depth with which Martinez wrote about jazz festivals and performers he inherited from his mother, the late jazz singer Lorez Alexandria, who recorded several albums in Los Angeles.
Martinez is survived by his wife, Wynona, and his son, Bryant.
(Since Sunday is the start of daylight savings time, please remember to set your clocks ahead one hour so you will not miss this celebration of life for a man remembered for his kindness and love of others.)
