Michael Landsberry Obituary

Michael Terrance Landsberry

January 20, 1968

October 21, 2013

On 21 October 2013, we lost a good man. No matter the label, husband and father, son and brother, teacher and friend, coach and mentor, Sci-fi nut or golf geek. Mike was there to lend a hand, or an ear. He was the epitome of "Life is Good", both displaying this on the inside and out. He lived as many hope to achieve, totally in love with his wife, and so very proud of his daughters. He was a former Marine and was actively serving in the Nevada Air National Guard. Mike had a passion for teaching and was dedicated to his students both past and present. Once he became your friend, it was a forever thing. Once you served with him you became a brother. Most people have hailed him as a hero for his actions that day, but to those who had the absolute pleasure of knowing him that was already fact. Mike was first in and last out, always with a smile and word of encouragement. As we mourn him, our hearts have had to grow just to hold the memories. Mike leaves behind the love of his life, wife Sharon, and the lights of his life, step-daughters Alisa and Andrea along with his mother Christy Arrabito and brother Reggie Landsberry.

Visitation hours are scheduled from 9-6pm on Saturday, 2 November at Walton Sparks Funeral Home, 1745 Sullivan Lane, Sparks. A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, 3 November at Sparks Christian Fellowship, 510 Greenbrae Drive, Sparks.

Not sure what to say?

This is the kind of thing that this man would do for anyone. I still think of him each time that there is another shooting somewhere in this country. The pain and sorrow that another family has to endure needs to stop!

Mr. Landsberry was my favorite teacher throughout middle school. His classroom was a safe haven for me. It's where I met my best friends and where I had most of my biggest memories. He was the first person I turned to when my parents were getting a divorce my eighth grade year. I found my love for math. I can still remember when he was being deployed and we made him a video to say goodbye, and we saw him cry. And also when he video chatted alll of us during our eighth grade graduation ceremony. He was an amazing man and I am very grateful to have had him as a teacher and positive male influence in my life.

I met Mike 6 years ago when I began working as a counselor at Sparks Middle School. Mike was always incredibly kind to me, and we always had such great conversations on lunch duty where he was almost everyday supervising soccer for the kids. We talked about students we were concerned about, fantasy football or even our shared love of Star Wars. He cared quite deeply for his students, and was an incredible colleague to those he worked with. When he was deployed to Afghanistan 2 yrs ago his presence was missed by all of us so much...and we were so happy and grateful to see him return safely. My heart is just aching for his family, his close friends, his students, and all of the lives he has touched at some point. I was blessed to have called him friend.
I will miss you, Mike!!! And I can't thank you enough for the sacrifice you made for so many...you sir, are indeed a superhero!
Love Always...

We have 3 sons who are career army soldiers who have served in 13 deployments. Michael served his country, his state, and his students. Who could have ever imagined he would give his life in what should have been the most peaceful place he served. He is one of the greatest heros in our state. I truly hope the honor his name by renaming the school after him. God Bless Him and all His Family for their loss, May we never forget him. Love and prayers.

I am active duty Air Force currently in specialized training for my job in law enforcement.

I had heard about Sgt. Landsberry when the news of Sparks broke out, and my heart sank (yet was very proud of his heroic actions) when I heard of his passing. I never knew him, but I did lose a Brother in Arms. That's enough for me to mourn.

Well, it's a week later and I'm working on some speaking topics for this class, and discovered an article on Sgt Landsberry which included his military history. My eyes watered up. Looking at his life and everything he was trying to accomplish - which seemed to mirror my own life and ambitions (military brat; active duty; deployments) - there was a very profound connection; and I even more now consider this man a hero even more beyond measure than I first thought.

I too want to be a First Sergeant and believe in the power of mentorship and education. So to see that this man was working towards those goals and had dedicated a lifetime of service to not just his country but to educating the youth of America? Damn... He's the man, seriously.

I will remember his story. If anything, it has lit a new fire within to ensure that I continue serving to the utmost of my ability; to make sure I work towards making a positive difference in this generation and future generations of Airmen. But that's not just for me; it's going to be for all those guys before me doing their thing. For guys like Sgt Landsberry. I want to make men like him proud.

Dear Michael Landsberry,
On October 21st 2013 I heard the news of a shooting at my daughters school. I was in a complete panic. I couldnt breathe. My mind was racing as I got dressed. Rushing to the school, all I could think of was my daughter and if she was ok. She had just made me a bracelet and I couldnt help but think in fleeting moments,"Was this the last gift I would ever get from her?"
When I got to the high school, where we were told to wait for our children to be delivered back to us, there was a crowd of paniced parents, a media frenzy, and police directing people where to go.We soon heard that there was one teacher dead,a student dead, and 2 other students injured. The panic turned into pure terror for me and others.

Minutes felt like hours. The tears kept flowing and I couldnt even find the strength to text a friend or family about what was going on. My entire body was shaking in fear. Though parents hugged one another,I still found no comfort in the support that so many tried to give me. I still couldnt breathe!

Finally the news came that, if your child was injured, you would have been informed by now. A slight bit of relief but not enough to feel comfort. It wasnt until I saw my girl that I took my first real breath of air and felt the comfort that I was longing for. She means everything to me!

Mr. Landsberry, I owe you a debt that I can not possibly pay you for, even if you were still here with us all. If you wouldnt have intervened on this day, who knows how many more teachers or students would have been hurt or even killed.
Until October 21st 2013 I did not have the opperunity to know you, like so many others did. You weren't an aquaintance of mine and I didnt even know your name.We had no connections what so ever.
My daughter goes to Sparks Middle School. You were not her Teacher and she did not know you either.
We dont have memories of you( like so very many people have shared since your death)to share. You were a complete stranger to me and my family. You owed me nothing and yet gave to me the best gift ever, The life of my daughter. I can only say,"Thank you" and know that even though you gave everyone you knew the gift of your presence and friendship for their memories, you gave me, (a complete stranger), the gift of my daughters life and her coming back home to me, so she can give me the same gift of memories that all your friends and family, have of you. I hold you forever in my heart with great honor and thanks.
Love,
Ramona Bishop

October 25, 2013

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.
