Matthew Anthony Louis Barnes was a native Nevadan, the youngest son of Marvin and Esther Barnes born on September 2, 1986 at St. Mary's Hospital in Reno. Matthew, who went by Matt, attended Alice Smith Elementary School. Matt loved sports and excelled in playing baseball and football for the North Valley's High School Panthers where he graduated in 2005.
Matt avidly enjoyed the outdoors which included hunting, fishing, and four wheeling with his father, brother and friends anytime he could. His passion in life, fly fishing, brought Matt to work as a manager in the Fishing Department for Sportsman's Warehouse where he shared his love and knowledge of the sport with others.
Matt, who always dreamed of a career in law enforcement, followed his dream and the footsteps of his father, mother and brother, ultimately leaving the Sportsman's Warehouse to become a deputy. Matt started his law enforcement career with the Humboldt County Sherriff's Department in Winnemucca, Nevada in 2011. His intense love for the community of Reno led him back home to work as a Deputy for the Washoe County Sherriff's Office in the fall of 2012.
Matt spent one year with the Washoe County Sheriff's Office and loved every minute of his short, but fulfilling career. In the spring of 2013 Matt met the love of his life, Ashlyn Ziarnowski. Love at first sight made them a strong and inseparable couple.
In August of 2013 Matt was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. He courageously battled the disease for two months with Ashlyn and his family always by his side. On October 14th 2013 Matt lost his fight with cancer and passed away surrounded by all of his friends and family.
Matt is survived by his mother and father, Esther and Marvin Barnes, his loving girlfriend Ashlyn Ziarnowski, brother and sister-in-law Michael and Kathleen Barnes and niece Emmery Barnes.
A Memorial Service for Matt will be held on October 20th, 2013 at 3:00pm at St. John's Presbyterian Church. If you would like to make a donation, the family has asked that donations be made to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

Al and I were very sorry to hear about Matt's passing. I found out about it through Facebook and told Al. Matt was in between Chris and Char in age, and we cannot imagine what it's like to lose a child. We would have attended the services, but Al had to work. (I have a very difficult time writing something when someone passes. It's very hard to find the right words.)

The Barnes family offers all of us an example of an outstanding family role model. Their record of total family service to Law Enforcement and the community they live in demonstrates a rare but outstanding commitment. I loved working with him at S.W. he talked to me like I was his age, or he talked to me like he was my age. (I'm 52) He is a dear soul that I will always cherish having run into in this life. I will remember you as the man who would help anyone and everyone whoever needed it. The friend to turn to when you needed advice or just to vent a little.
