Joseph Evans Obituary

Joseph Eugene Evans, M.D.

Aug 25, 1939

May 22, 2014

Born in Miles City, Montana on August 25, 1939 to Joseph Elishe and Jessie Ellen Evans. Joseph Eugene (Joe) spent his youth rambling around Three Forks, Montana and graduated from Three Forks High School in 1957.

He graduated from Carroll College in Helena, Montana majoring in Pre-Med. While in college he met his beautiful bride to be, Nancy. In 1961, Joseph and Nancy married and moved to St. Louis where Joe attended St. Louis University Medical School. It was in St. Louis that son Joseph Edward and daughter Patricia Kay were born.

In 1965, he served his medical internship in Erie, Pennsylvania. Eager to get back west, Joe accepted a job offer in 1966 to work as an ER Physician at Washoe Medical Center (now Renown Medical Center) in Reno where his daughter Cathleen Ann was born soon after. This was the Vietnam Era and Joe joined the Nevada National Guard and served as a Battalion Surgeon and trained Medics for the war. After leaving the ER, he took a position as medical director at the Nevada State Mental Hospital.

In December 1970, Joe started his private Family Practice in Sparks. Five months later, his son Michael William was born at Washoe Medical Center. Joe served as president of the Washoe County Medical Society from 1979 to 1980. At this time he worked closely with the UNR Medical School setting up a family practice residency program. He retired from his Family Practice in 1989 and went into Occupational/Environmental Medicine. Always a forward thinker, he was one of the first physicians to establish and implement a Dental PPO. He did not fully retire until he sold his Dental PPO in 2012.

Camping & the outdoors were favorites of the Evans Family. Joe bought & remodeled a cabin at Lake Almanor. Many beautiful moments and fun adventures where made there with dear friends and family. Joe & Nancy also spent several fun and loving years exploring most of the US & some of Canada & Mexico in their Bounder Motorhome.

Joe is preceded in death by his parents. He left behind his loving wife Nancy of 53 years and his four children Joe (Jodi), Patty (Todd), Cathy and Mike, sister Susan Hayes (Bob) and four grandchildren, Joseph Erik, Jessika Nikole, Jacob Scott, and Joshua Ryan.

There will be a private ceremony at a later date. A donation may be made in his memory to a charity of your choice.

Joe was far beyond being simply our superb family doctor. Joe was a friend and a confidant. His demeanor was that of a gentle, kind, authentic man, with whom our entire family felt wonderfully cared for, and cared about.

Dearest Aunt Nancy and cousins Joe, Patty, Cathy and Michael- you are all in my thoughts and prayers! I have such fond memories of Uncle Joe - as kind, soft-spoken and easy-going - even when us cousins were running wild at the reunions! I remember that he pierced my ears in '76 at his dr office-that was so cool! And tended to my foot that came into contact with a nail on the dock at lake almanor!
Thanks for the memories, Uncle Joe! Love you !
