Carrol Baird, a resident of Livermore, passed away on August 24, 2013 at home with her family by her side ending her long battle with cancer. Carrol was born on December 28, 1939, in Reno, Nevada as the younger daughter of Philip and Fern Crowder. Carrol grew up in Reno and graduated from Reno High School and completed her first two years of college at University Nevada, Reno. Carrol spent 50 years of her adult life in Livermore.
Carrol graduated from San Jose State College in 1961 with a degree in Education and married Reed Baird later the same year. Carrol began her teaching career at Sonoma School in Livermore the year it opened and worked at most of Livermore's elementary schools as a teacher or reading specialist. A compassionate educator, Carrol continued her passion as a tutor for several years following her retirement from the Livermore School District.
Carrol is survived by her husband, Reed, of 52 years; sister, Phyllis Longero of Yerington, Nevada; and two children, Chuck Baird, grandchildren Brendan and Lauren, and their mother, Dawn Garvey, of Walnut Creek, California; and Christy Baird, her partner Heather, and grandsons, Dyllan and Cole of Walnut Creek, California.
Throughout her life, Carrol was an active member in her communities and built scores of lasting friendships; at UNR and SJSC as a member of Kappa Alpha Theta Sorority, a past President of the Pleasanton-Livermore Junior Woman's Club and a pioneering soccer mom by playing in the Old Saturday Stumblers for the Pizza Arcade Avengers in Livermore. In 2000, Carrol completed the 60 mile Avon Walk for Cancer with her daughter Christy.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Porter's Restaurant at Poppy Ridge Golf Course in Livermore on Monday, September 9, 2013, from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm.
Carrol has requested that in lieu of flowers, memorial gifts can be made to Hope Hospice, 6377 Clark Ave., Suite 100, Dublin, CA 94568, or to the charity of your choice. Arraingments by Callaghan Mortuary, 925 447-2942.
