Harry Eugene Walker, Jr., 88, of Reno, Nevada, passed away on Sunday, June 16th, 2013, at his home, surrounded by his loved ones. In his tribute, it was Father's Day...
Harry was born in Walthill, Nebraska to Harry and Julie Walker. The family moved to Shell Lake, Minnesota where Harry attended school in a one-room country schoolhouse. It was here that he developed a love for books. Ironically, however, this is not where he was taught to read.
Relocating to Callaway, Minnesota in the third grade, Harry met his favorite teacher, Miss Jenny Moody. Miss Moody took the time and effort to teach Harry to read. He would be forever in her debt.
At ten year's old, the family moved to Detroit Lakes, Minnesota, where Harry graduated from high school and first met his future wife, Sue. After graduation, he attended the University of Minnesota, but after one year, at age 19, was drafted into the Army. He was stationed in the Philippines during World War II and spent two and a half years in the service until his return to marry his wife of almost 40 years, Ortrude (Sue) Katherine Lefebvre.
Harry and Sue moved to North Dakota where he finished his Bachelor's Degree in Education. They relocated to Newcastle, Wyoming where their first daughter, Mary, was born. After a brief time, they moved to Yuma, Arizona to help his father run the family business, a trading post on an Indian reservation. Thus began his love of Indian artifacts. From there the family moved to Elko, Nevada where Harry taught school and they lived in the local dormitory. It was in Elko where their second daughter , Ellen, was born.
In 1958 the family moved for the last time to Reno, Nevada where Harry taught high school English for over 30 years. Most of his teaching years were spent at Reno High School teaching honor's English. During his teaching career, Harry earned a Master's Degree from the University of Nevada, Reno. It was also during this time when his third daughter, Jennifer, was born.
Harry had a God-given gift and a fervent passion for teaching. His legacy has carried on through many of his family members. He was loved and respected by all who were fortunate to have him as their teacher. After his retirement in 1986, Harry continued to be recognized and admired by countless former students.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Sue Walker. Harry is survived by his twin sisters, Jean Haack and Joan Wolden; three daughters, Mary Kalanges, Ellen McKinley, and Jennifer Grange; two sons-in-law, Michael McKinley and Scott Grange; seven grandchildren, Amy Sanchez, Emily Sala, Daniel McKinley, Jessica McKinley, Miranda Grange, Adam Grange, Logan Grange; and one great granddaughter, Olivia Sala.
A celebration of life will be held at the home of Harry Walker on Saturday, August 3rd, at 4:00 p.m. A private family gathering will be held at a later date to scatter his ashes.
