Joan Claire Farber

April 14, 1942

April 27, 2013

Joan Claire Farber passed away on April 27, 2013, after an eight year battle with breast cancer. Joan was born on April 14, 1942, to Gerard F. and Kathryn Hemighaus, the second of seven children. Raised in Philadelphia, she attended West Catholic Girls High School and Pierce College. In the early 1970s she moved to Southern California where she met Ken Farber in 1975. They married on January 15, 1977. Joan had been employed as an executive assistant for American Medical International in Beverly Hills, but when the couple's first child, Nicholas, arrived in 1979, she "retired" to become a full-time mom. Their second son, Jonathan, arrived in early 1982. Joan was the consummate volunteer. She worked with the Pasadena Symphony Juniors and the Crown Guild in Southern California. When the boys were school age, she immersed herself in PTA work, soon becoming president. In 1992, the family relocated to Reno, and Joan became involved with the Reno Philharmonic Society and the Junior League. Joan loved to travel and had lived in Europe for a while prior to getting married. She, Ken, and the boys also made innumerable road trips around the western states. Joan also had an affinity towards education and fashion. She took many classes over the years in interior design and in cooking, and was a style-maven. She spent some of her happiest days at the Jones New York store in downtown Reno. Her association with the company was much more of a hobby than a job. She worked there part-time, trying to help clients dress as stylishly as she did. Joan is survived by her husband of 36 years, Ken, and her sons, Nicholas and Jonathan, Nicholas's wife Erin and their boys, William and Bennett, along with her father, Gerard Hemighaus, and her four sisters and two brothers, and their families. A celebration of Joan's life will be held at the Nevada Museum of Art, a place she loved to visit, on Saturday, May 11, 2013, at 4:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her name to the Salvation Army or the Catholic Charities of Northern Nevada. Joan was a classy lady, and she will be sorely missed.
