John L. Smith

John L. Smith passed away on November 25, 2012. He was born August 24, 1924 in Mina, NV to Irving Jr. and Dorothea Louise Smith, and then moved to Reno at age 6.

After graduating from Reno High School in 1942, he enlisted in the Army Air Corp. He then served in the US Navy and his last assignment with the US Army 5th Bomber Command ended in March 1946. He received Honorable discharges from all three Branches of the US Military.

He returned to Reno, attended UNR, and joined State Farm Insurance where he was an agent for 34 years until his retirement in December 1995.

John loved his native Nevada and was an avid outdoorsman. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping and mining. He held several mining claims in the Pine Nut Range which he actively mined until the 1990's.

John's biggest enjoyment was his love of music. His talents were many and varied. However his greatest asset being that he was so extraordinarily gifted with a beautiful tenor voice. He turned down recording contracts including one from Bing Crosby, because it meant spending time away from his young family.

Preceding him in death were grandsons, Leif Hepfler and Austin Powers, brother-in-law, George Folsom and niece, Jeannine Folsom.

John is survived by wife, Dee; daughter, Joy Riley (Tony); sons, Eric and Christopher (Marilyn); step-sons, Todd Powers (Nadine), and Jerry Powers; sister, Dorothea Folsom; cherished friends, Jacque and Swayn Moore; 13 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.

John was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, had been active in the church and had sung in the church choir in previous years.

A service celebrating his life will be held Friday, December 14, 10 a.m. at the LDS Chapel, 4751 Neil Rd., Reno, NV. In lieu of flowers please make donations to the .
