Michael W. "Mike" Barrett

December 27, 1954

August 8, 2013

Michael William "Mike" Barrett, born December 27, 1954 in Wilmington, North Carolina, passed away unexpected yet peacefully, in his sleep at his home in Searsmont, Maine August 8, 2013. Mike was the third of ten children born to Jim and Cathie Barrett, of Las Vegas, Nevada. Starting in North Carolina, the family moved to Miami, Florida and then to Reno, Nevada in 1972 where Mike graduated from Wooster High School, as did his seven younger brothers and sisters. After high school Mike entered the construction industry via the Plumbers and Pipefitters Union as a journeyman plumber. He was well known for his wide range of building skills, not just plumbing, especially woodworking. He did tire of the up and down nature of the building business and went to work for Sierra Pacific Power Company and rose to field manager during his 20 years. In 2001, after a visit to Maine, he decided to accept a job offer as Property Manager of his brother Jay's property on Westport Island. While he fell in love with Maine and he also fell in love with Lisa duHamel. Maine brought Mike so much joy.

Starting with his brothers camping out in the back yard he really enjoyed the outdoors. He loved to fish, hunt, boat, hike and camp. And he shared with many that he was in heaven being in love with Lisa who also enjoyed the outdoors.

Mike was forever making a spectacle of the day with his special finger wave, hugging, pink hats and outfits, kisses and generally rowdy behavior. And his antics and comments were always with love and affection. Yes, often he went too far but he always meant to bring a smile to everyone's face and heart. He was a tremendous example to his many nieces and nephews who for years have always sent one another notes when trying to work through problems… WWMBD—What Would Mike Barrett Do? Because he always had the time to talk with them and share with them what he felt. Mike will be remembered for many adventures, emails, and his sign off of HUGES and KISSES (hugs and kisses, Mike's way). And we will never forget his big smile…. which was covered most of the time by that giant mustache.

Mike is loved and deeply missed by his parents, his brothers and sisters; Jay, Marybeth (King), Pat, Eileen (Kahler) Chris, Martin, Vince, Greg and Catherine (Gardella), and so many nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Truckee Meadows Boys & Girls Club.

A prayer service and burial will be held at 1pm on Friday September 6, 2013 at Our Mother of Sorrows Cemetery, 2700 North Virginia Street, Reno, NV. The family will have a reception at the home of Chris Barrett, 6461 Brookview Circle, Reno, NV at 3:30pm following the service. Friends are welcome to join the family.
