Monte Vre Non, 67, passed away peacefully on Sunday morning, February 17, 2013. Born in Reno on January 18, 1946, he attended Reno schools, graduating from Reno High School in 1964. Monte was a loving brother, husband, father, educator, sportsman and a stellar athlete, living most of his years in his hometown. He loved people and was a stranger to none.
One of Nevada's all-time great athletes, Monte was Reno High's "Player of The Year" on the 1963 AA State Championship Basketball Team and earned First Team All State honors in both 1963 and 1964. His senior year was amazing, as Monte was named First Team Basketball All-American, one of just 100 out of 100,000 players nationwide.
Monte also excelled in football and was first string end on Reno High's State AA Championship Team the Fall of 1963. Finally, it was Track and Field which awarded Monte his title of Three Sport Letterman when as a pole vaulter, he reached 14'3" in high school. In 1967-68, he vaulted 15'3", becoming the Big Sky Conference record holder at Weber State College. And he accomplished all this with an 'old school' metal pole! Again, as a three-sport collegiate athlete, his accomplishments are literally too numerous to list. He attended Dixie Junior College and graduated from Weber State in 1968. He earned his Master's Degree in Education from Western Montana College in 1970. It was there that he became known as "Coach" when he was assistant coach in all three sports, guiding them all to championships. In 1999, he was inducted into the Reno High Hall of Fame.
Monte loved sharing outdoor activities with his son, Shane, brothers and many friends. Famous for his fly fishing skills, he would often be found at Birch Creek and Smith Creek near Austin, catching enough "Brookies" to feed an army. He was a creative and highly skilled concrete mason and practiced his trade throughout Nevada for years.
Monte was preceded in death by his son, Yale; wife, Mary Marks; and parents Fern and Vincent. He is survived by his son, Shane (Erin Foster-Vre Non); daughter, Holli; sisters Anita; Donna Ennis ("Chuck"), Teresa Kilian ("Marty"); brothers Jay and Gary (Andrea); 13 nieces and nephews; long-time, loving friend and caregiver, Cheryl (Houser) Andrews; and abundant friends.
The family extends sincere gratitude to the kind people at Renown Hospital, St. Mary's Hospice and Bella Vita Reno for their loving care of our Monte and the staff at Care Chest for their special assistance. At Monte's request, there will be no formal services. Donations may be made to any of the aforementioned organizations, Reno High Sports program or
. Monte will be greatly missed, yet never forgotten. A celebration of life is being planned for March 17th.
