ROGER L. ERICKSON

Roger Erickson, prominent local attorney, age 79, passed away from congestive heart failure on May 3, 2013 at Renown Hospital in Reno, NV with his wife and three children by his side.

Roger was born Nov. 4, 1933 in Battle Lake, MN. He was the youngest of six children born to Bert Melvin Erickson and Lenora Lee Erickson. Roger moved to Seattle, WA when he was 11 years old.

He attended Franklin High School and then the Univ. of Washington undergraduate and law schools. Roger was the first in his family to attend college.

Prior to attending the university, Roger was drafted into the Army and sent to Korea. He served active duty during the Korean Conflict, serving from 1953 to 1955.

In June, 1958 he married the former Joyce Hermes in Tacoma, WA, then finished undergraduate school and law school while she taught school in Seattle, and he worked for Seattle City Light.

Roger began his law career as a law clerk with the Supreme Court of Nevada in Carson City from 1962 to 1963. Following that he worked in Reno with Emile Gezelin, and later with Richard P. Wait. In 1969 he founded, along with Donald Thorpe, what is now the law firm of Erickson, Thorpe & Swainston. That firm is still in existence today, 44 years later.

Roger was a member and president of Delta Theta Phi legal fraternity while attending U of W Law School. Other professional organizations include the Insurance Defense Counsel, the American Bar Assoc. and 45 years as a member of Reno's local Prospector's Club.

He and his wife Joyce were married for 55 years. He is survived by Joyce, three children, Keith, Kristin, and Mark, of Reno; daughters-in-law, Kelli and Jenny, and grandson Max. Also surviving are three sisters: Verna Anderson of Logan, Ohio; Adeline Campbell of Ridgefield, WA; and Luella Trosdahl of Battle Lake, MN. He is pre-deceased by both parents, a brother, Bert Erickson, and a sister, Genevieve Franklin.

Roger was a very friendly, likeable person, with a wonderful sense of humor. He loved to tell jokes and could really be the life-of-the party. He easily made friends from all walks of life, and they were all equally important to him.

Roger and Joyce were fortunate to have traveled the world, but one of their favorite places was their cabin at Graeagle and the many friends they met there.

There will be a private family graveside service. A "Celebration of Life" in his memory will be held at The Grove at South Creek, 95 Foothill Road, located at the corner of So. Virginia & Foothill Rd. on Friday, May 17, 2013 at 2:00 PM.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Reno VA Medical Center, c/o Voluntary Services 975 Kirman Ave., Reno, NV 89502 or the Don W. Reynolds Boys & Girls Club, 2680 E. 9th St., Reno, NV 89512.
