Roy McKenzie peacefully passed away in his home surrounded by loved ones on Saturday, May 11, 2013. Born and raised in Ely, NV, he graduated from White Pine County High School in 1956 where he played basketball and football. He served in the U.S. Army as a Corporal and was owner of several businesses, including Pete's Drive-In (Ely, NV); Roy's Clothesline (Reno and Sparks, NV); and H&L Hendry Engineering Sales (Concord and Dublin, CA). Roy was head coach for the Escondido, CA Pop Warner Vikings football team, enjoyed hunting, fishing, NASCAR, and spending time with his grandchildren. Golfing was his passion and he was humbled by his three (3) hole in ones. He was loved by his family and feared by his competitors!
Survived by the love of his life of 53 years, Vincenza McKenzie; sons Jeffrey (Brenda) and David (Carol) McKenzie; Grandchildren Jeff (Lindsey) and Jason Walters; Alexander, Erica, Dylan, Michelle & Emily McKenzie; great-granddaughter Jena Rylee Walters; sisters Gwena (Joe) Bakaric and Annelise McKenzie; brother John (Joyce) McKenzie; and extended family in Nevada and New Jersey. Preceded in passing by father and mother John and Fay McKenzie; sister Linda Fay McKenzie; daughter Jena Lou McKenzie Walters; and grandson Matthew David McKenzie.
Services will be held on Friday, May 17, 2013 at 1:00 pm at Our Mother of Sorrows Catholic Cemetery, Most Holy Redeemer Chapel, 2700 N. Virginia Street, Reno. Interment immediately following. In lieu of flowers please make a donation in memory of Roy to either St. Jude's or the Wounded Warriors charities.
