VICARI

George P. Vicari died April 9, 2009 at his home in Reno after a long illness. George was born on December 6, 1941 in Sacramento, California to George and Angel Vicari.

He was a graduate of Sacramento High School and experienced life through his travels and great love of reading. He moved to Reno and was a designer for Weinstocks until he became co-owner of La Fleur Flower Shop where he worked for 37 years. He then spent seven years at Barnes and Noble. His love for books and unique art pieces reflected his creative bent.

George is survived by E. C. “Frank“ Graves of Reno, his life partner of 41 years , and his sister, Rosalie Watson of Idaho. He will be remembered best for his wonderful smile and infectious laugh which warmed the heart of many as he looked for the good in all people. If you'd care to share a memory, you may send a card to his residence.

Our community has lost a truly class act.
I am the owner of St Ives Florist and over the years George has sent me many notes of support and personal thanks for taking such good care of his clients after the sale of his business.
We truly lost a fun, talented and amazing man.
My heart broke today when I had heard the news.

Memories of the La Fleur days vividly emerged last week. My daughters (33 and 29) and I experienced the joys of the seasons, aesthetics, and giving at La Fleur. Whether the "traditional Avansino Christmas centerpiece", the single rose for a teacher, or the perfect ornament for our collection each visit was an artistic adventure. George was the constant and we will remember his graciousness forever. Thank you for the treasured entrepreneurship.

My love, prayers and thoughts are with you Frank. You and George were like one. Thank you for taking such good care of him with your care, dignity and love. George was a special man and nephew. We loved him dearly. I especially loved the awful birthday cards he used to send me. I would laugh for hours. George is at peace now and with the rest of the Vicari family passed. Frank I will always be here for you and look forward to a visit soon. God bless you and your family. Love Aunt Shirley

I had the honor of knowing George since junior high school in Sacramento in the 1950s. He was always a special, wonderful person. At our 40th Sacramento High Class of 1959 reunion, it was a joy to re-connect. We were all looking forward to seeing George at the 50th in October. We will remember George fondly.

To Frank and Family,
So very sorry to hear of your great loss. You and George will always be remembered as a special part of the "old Reno Community." There's never been another LaFluer with its grand flowers, fabulous gifts and personal, attentive customer service.

While on lunch at Barnes and Noble, I would watch the birds and I slowly noticed that someone would put seed out for them every Friday and Saturday (and I presume Sunday)and I would think about what a thoughtful and caring person it must be to take the time to do that. One morning I happened to look out the window and saw George carefully scattering seed around the bushes and I thought that made happy and perfect sense. For the 6 years I had the pleasure of working with George every week he always had (and continues to have where he is now, I'm sure) more class and humor, dignity, warmth, gentleness and compassion than most of us can ever hope for and was always there with some wise advice and maybe some risque humor for anyone who needed it. If I can ever even be half as good a person as George has been, I will count it a success with a thank-you in my heart to George. I am sad to see you go George, but so much happier that I could know you before you had to and I am honored to hold such good memories of such a great man.

Frank, I was shocked and upset to learn of this awful loss. Many years ago I worked across the street from LaFleur at First Interstate Bank (now Wells Fargo). I worked there for 13 years and got to know you and George pretty well. My last name was Walker then. I always enjoyed it when you and George came into the bank or when I went over to LaFleur to order your glorious flowers. After that we were neighbors until I moved 4 years ago. My husband, Joe and I are very very sorry for your loss. George was a very special man. Please take care of yourself and know that our thoughts are with you.

My family's pharmacy (Ramos Drug) was just down the street from La Fleur, so over the years it was my good fortune to get to know Frank and George and all the other wonderful people who were connected to the shop. We spent many happy hours visiting (and joking a lot!) in the basement workroom at La Fleur and I will always treasure my memories of George's kindness and wonderful laugh! George and I share the same birthday of Dec. 6th, but the similarity ends there since I can only aspire to his incredible creativity and generosity of spirit. He was a prince among men and to Frank (and to George's family, both biological and extended), I send my love and condolences.

I worked with George at B&N, and I have to say without a doubt he was always the highlight of my day. Such a sweet, warm and gentle person with nothing but positivity oozing from him. I was so sad to hear of his passing. I wish his life partner Frank and sister Rosalie the warmest wishes of support and love at this difficult time.

I worked with George and Frank at LaFleur in the mid-70s. I was always impressed by George's bouyant personality and his ability to take what looked like random odds and ends and turn them into very creative decorations. A little glue and gold lame` and presto--a work of art! He was quite the artist. My wife always enjoyed the flower arrangements he and Frank would send home with me. We will both miss George. Frank, we're deeply sorry for your loss. We are so glad we got to know you both. We still hang the Christmas ornaments that you gave us for our first Christmas in 1975. We will miss George.

When I think of George, I can't help but smile. It was an honor to work with such a fine man at B&N. George, along with his warm smile & contagious laughter, was someone that I always looked forward to seeing. I have only fond memories of George, and I feel blessed that I had the opportunity to know someone who was so kind.
To Frank and all your family and friends....I wish you peace and sweet serenity.

We have all lost a sweet, funny, loving friend that enriched this world simply by his presence in it. My heart aches for you Frank, and for the family and many friends he left behind..and for our little corner of the world that was so brightened by George's, quirky sense of humor, and sheer joy to be living. It was the highpoint of my day just to come by the shop to see you and George and get a hug. I knew I could go to George and get one...and Wally knew he could always get candy! God gave us hearts in which to store memories....May nothing but good memories comfort you, Frank.

I am sorry for your loss and hope memories of George will sustain you through this sad time. I worked with George for several years at the bookstore and realized I had known him from La Fleur also. Everyone loved George. He will be missed by everyone because of his warm sense of humor and generous spirit. I'll never forget his wonderful smile and kindness to all.
