John was born in Glendale, CA and spent his early years in Burbank. As a youngster, John was in Boy Scout Troop 75. During 50 mile backpacking trips to clean up wilderness camps in Yosemite, he came to love everything outdoors. The family moved to Reno in 1972. John participated in the Reno Jr. Ski Program and the Reno Jets, winning the 105 lb. Jr. Golden Gloves Title for Northern Nevada. After graduating from Wooster HS in 1976, he entered the U.S. Navy, serving as a diesel/engineman on the USS Kirk, a fast frigate in the Far East. From 1980 to 1986 he lived in Mammoth Lakes, CA and worked as a mechanic for Mammoth Mountain. John returned to Reno where he enjoyed fishing, camping and backpacking in the Sierras. His favorite places were in the Northern California Redwoods around Crescent City and the Smith River. John was a kind, gentle soul who loved his family, especially his many nephews and nieces. He was "The Best Uncle Ever!"
John is survived by his father, Marvin Spiker, mother, Cathy Linde (Jim), brother, Jack, and sisters Nancy (Sean), Christi and Mary (Joel), and eight nieces and nephews.
In the early morning hours of March 31, John passed away peacefully in his home. A memorial service that celebrated his life was held on April 5th, at St. Luke's Lutheran Church in Reno. He will be greatly missed.
In lieu of donations, John's family would ask of his friends to plant a tree in his memory.
