June 10, 2014

Margaret Cory died in her sleep on Tuesday, June 10, at the age of 91. She was born to Benjamin Demas and Olive Harrison in Pasadena, California on February 16, 1923. She attended schools in Pasadena and Altadena, and graduated from Stanford University with a BA degree in 1943 at the age of 20. Shortly after graduation, Margaret enlisted in the U.S. Navy, and served through the end of WWII. She met and married her husband in the Navy -Dr. Charles Duane Cory. After the war, they moved to Chicago, where Duane established a dental practice. In 1948, they moved to the planned community of Park Forest, Illinois, where both Margaret and Duane were active in community leadership roles. Margaret also attained her Masters of Library Science degree from the University of Chicago while raising their children, worked as a reference librarian, and was a member of the Park Forest library board.

Widowed in 1975, Margaret moved back to her beloved California. She made a busy life in the Bay Area working, engaging in adventures with the Stanford Singles, playing bridge and traveling. She retired in 1985 and enjoyed her busy retirement. She enjoyed volunteering with the Menlo Park library, providing books to shut-ins. Margaret moved to Reno, Nevada in the fall of 2013 to live near her daughter.

Margaret was preceded in death by her husband, Duane Cory. She is survived by her brother, Robert Harrison (Mary) of Los Altos Hills, California, her children Robert (Laura) of Palo Alto, California, William (Carol) of Scottsdale, Arizona, and Anne of Reno, two nieces - Liz Gleason and Pat Harrison, one nephew - Anthony Cory - and 7 grandchildren.

The family would like to thank the staff at Emeritus at the Seasons in Reno for their warm and accepting care, and the staff of Senior Helpers - especially Laura - who helped make Margaret's days comfortable.
