Elaine Drake Stephens, age 92, died peacefully in her sleep, on June 24, 2014 at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Sharyl and Rafael Mendez, in Los Angeles, Ca. Elaine was born on February 1, 1922, in Roy, Utah, to Wallace and Viola Drake. In 1938, she married Morris B. Stephens in their hometown of Ogden, Utah. After Morry secured a job with the Southern Pacific Railroad, they moved to Carlin, Nevada, which became their home, and where they raised their three children. In 1957, Morry and Elaine purchased and homesteaded five acres off the Mt. Rose Highway in Reno, on which Morry built a home that he and Elaine moved into in 1965. Elaine was widowed after 65 years of marriage, but lived independently in her own home until just recently.
Elaine was a loving mother of two daughters, Sharyl Lee Mendez, of Los Angeles, CA and Marigene Stiles, of Leawood, KS, and one son, Wallace D. Stephens, of Reno, Nevada. She was loved by 8 grandchildren, Ralph & Nicole Mendez, Staci, Shon, Tiffany, & Blake Stiles, Wally & Cary Stephens and 11 great-grandchildren, who called her "Grandma Bumpy" in reference to their enjoyment of riding down the bumpy, dirt road that led to her home off Mt. Rose Hwy. Being a very talented homemaker, she loved working in her beautiful home and yard. Elaine was successful in her catering business, "Elaine's Edibles". She catered weddings, parties, and also created beautiful flower arrangements for those and other events. She also taught piano lessons to over 50 students. For many years, Elaine was the Elko LDS Stake Primary President, and in Reno, many children from her church ward knew her as "Sister Friendly", as she loved helping the Primary children.
Surviving are two sisters, Bonnie Burbidge, Ogden, Utah, and Peggy Candland, Logan, Utah. She was loved by her two "favorite sons-in-law", Rafael Mendez, and Lynn Stiles, and her daughter-in-law, Sandy Newmark. She was adored as "Mom and Grandma" by all the Claudine and Stan Hansen family, Amenta and Ken Nixon, and daughter, Kendra, and by Jeremy Newmark, Jason and Jen Newmark and their two sons.
The family thanks Pilar, Betty and Patty for the compassionate, cheerful and competent care they gave Elaine in her last months.
