Mary Frances Porter

Mary Francis Porter passed away August 6th after a long illness. She was born in Guymon, OK. In 1917 and grew up in Kirksville, MO. She graduated from NE Missouri State with a degree in Home Economics and taught school in Nebraska and at the School of the Ozarks before joining the Women's Army Corps in 1943. After discharge, she worked in Denver and Albuquerque before settling in Palo Alto in 1955, where she met Bernard Porter. They married in 1959 and moved to Reno when Dr. Porter became a researcher at the US Bureau of Mines.

After coming to Reno, Ms. Porter was active in a number of organizations. She was on the Governor's Commission on Education during the Sawyer Administration. She served as chapter president and then state president of the American Association of University Women. She was the chapter regent for the DAR. She was also active in Sons and Daughters of the Pilgrims and Colonial Dames of the 17th Century, and was a member of the American Legion. She also was a member and served as a deacon at St. John's Presbyterian Church in Reno. She is survived by her son, Mark Porter, of San Francisco, CA.

A Graveside Service will be held Friday, August 15, 2014 at 10:00am at Mountain View Cemetery at 435 Stoker Ave. Reno, NV 89503.

A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, August 30, 2014 at St. John's Presbyterian Church at 1070 W. Plumb Lane in Reno, NV 89509.
