Susan Davis

August 17, 2016

Our beloved Susan passed away on August 17, 2016. A Nevada native, Susan was born in the small desert town of Battle Mountain, Nevada to parents Jack and Mary Ancho Davis. Soon after her birth, she became a war baby when her father shipped out to Korea to fight as an officer in the U.S. Army. Susan and her mother, Mary, stayed behind with Susan's grandparents until her father returned from the war. Years later, her family settled in Sparks, Nevada and she attended Dilworth Junior High School and in 1969, graduated from Sparks High School. She then attended the University of Nevada, Reno where she was one of the founding members of the Alpha Chi Omega sorority. She graduated from UNR in 1974 with a degree in English and her teaching credential.

Her career in education for the next thirty years would become one of great public service to Nevada's educational system and its young people. As a fresh graduate, she landed a job at her alma mater, Dilworth Junior High School in Sparks, where she taught English for eight years. From 1981 to 1986, she taught English at Battle Mountain High School and then earned a job as a "teacher's teacher" working in Winnemucca, Nevada as a teacher trainer in 1987 and 1988. During this time, she took graduate classes at UNR and earned her Masters Degree in Education. In 1995, she became the Vice Principal of both Battle Mountain High School and Junior High and in 1998 became the Principal of BMHS until 2003, when she retired. She continued to teach English at the college level after her retirement for Great Basin College until 2015. She also served as a Board Member on the Lander County School Board for the past ten years.

Susan loved music and was the vocalist for several bands as well as an avid karaoke singer on the weekends. She loved all kinds of music, from rock and roll to folk ballads. Having never married, ("I just never found the right guy, I was always too busy!") she was a fervent supporter of and activist for animal rights. She lived with her two cats, Circus Kitty and Houdini, who provided endless entertainment and mischief as a backdrop to her active life.

She was preceded in life by her parents, Jack and Mary Ancho Davis. She is survived by her sister, Maria Davis (Mark) Denzler of Reno, her brother, Gregory (Sharlene) Davis of Reno, four nieces and nephews, Jack Denzler of San Francisco, Natalie Denzler of San Diego, Allison (Owen) Brolsma of Reno and Katelyn (Eric) Hasty of Reno. She was also blessed with four great-nieces and nephews, Brooks (deceased), Sadie and Ava Brolsma, and Colbie Hasty, of Reno.

A memorial will be held on Saturday, September 10, 2016 at 2:00pm at Battle Mountain High School, 425 Weaver Avenue. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Susan's memory to the Nevada Humane Society, 2825 Longley Lane, Reno, NV 89502

Rest In Peace, Miss Davis. I will miss you and your life was much too short. Loved playing in the bands with you and you were an amazing teacher. Glad I knew you. Love and Hugs.

Susan was that one year ahead in school at Dilworth and Sparks High but being with my older sister brought her into that world of friends that would always stay in touch somehow. As such it only happened in brief moments through the 70s, the last time being in the hallways at Dilworth when you were teaching with my soon to be father in law Moyes Atkinson. The excitement of you doing what you were meant to do was evident even then. From what I have read here it was a passion that never left your spirit and being married to a teacher I want to assure you that you did make a difference in many lives. I regret I never took that chance to talk to you again. However I can see now that regret was not a word in your vocabulary.

Ms. Davis was a mentor and guide for me. She could point out something you'd never think of as if it were standing there just waiting for you to look. I always felt so very small when it came to looking up at her. But I took every opportunity to do just that. Scared and worried that I'd never measure up, she took every chance to show me I could. She also showed my husband that he was an exceptional person. That he was far above the crowd. The one lesson she was always good at was teaching us to look to the stars but keep our feet firmly planted.

She was a very strict and stern teacher. Expecting nothing but excellence from each and one of us. She knew what we were capable of doing and helped us to reach for those goals and expectations before, during, and after school with extra mentoring if needed. She had a heart of gold and will be sorely missed. Rest in peace in Ms. Davis and may your song be carried on the wings of angels for all to hear :'(

Best drama teacher ever! I had so much fun in her classes and especially in the after school drama program. She had such a fun personality and sense of humor. I don't think she disliked a single soul. She will be greatly missed.

I absolutely loved my English class with her. She was firm and in complete control of her classroom, you did not mess around. I loved to listen to her voice when she would read Edgar Allen Poe to us. She was very passionate about what she did and believed in us. I will always remember her and hope she knew how much she inspired her students.

What a class act you have always been. Your mere presence in a room made everyone sit up straight, stand a little taller, and look to you for guidance. Battle Mountain truly lost one of the finest. Rest in peace Susan.

Ms. Davis, thank you for all the selfless years you gave us students at BMJH & BMHS. You were an amazing teacher, never lost your temper with us and was a great listener. You were the only woman in BM who was almost as tall as me. I adored you so much. I'm sorry the world lost you to soon. May you rest in peace and enjoy heaven.the world gained an amazing angle the day you got your wings. To your loved ones I'm sorry for your loss. Ms. Davis was a wonderful woman.
