Darcie Sandbank Obituary

Darcie Arnold (Sandbank)

May 29, 2011

The nursing -health care community lost our beloved friend Darcie after an unexpected, sudden death at her home in Sun City, AZ. Darcie was born to parents, Dorothy and Robert Arnold on September 30, 1955 in Columbus, OH. She graduated from Rochester Adams High School in Rochester, MI in 1974 and attended Grant Hospital School of Nursing in Columbus, OH and Otterbein College in Westerville, OH graduating in 1979 with a diploma in nursing and an Associate Degree of Science. She began her nursing career as an emergency nurse at Lancaster Fairfield County Hospital in Lancaster, OH until she moved to Provo, Utah. There she discovered her second passion of downhill skiing. In 1981, Darcie moved to Reno, NV and began working at Washoe Medical Center in the Emergency Department and became a CEN. In 1986 she began her 21 year marriage to William (Bill) Sandbank.

During her career in Reno, she worked at Washoe Medical Center, Reno Professional Counseling Center, and Sparks Family Hospital. In 2002, Darcie's health mandated that she leave acute care, but she continued to volunteer at the Orvis Nursing Clinic and was always available to any family or friends that needed nursing care. Darcie moved to Sun City, AZ to be close to her parents and help her father with his surgical recovery in May of 2010.

Darcie was a founding member of the Nurses Support Group of Reno and a member of the Nevada Nurses Association Peer Assistance Committee. She was a founding Director of the Step 2-Sierra Nevada Transition House for Women in Reno.

Darcie loved to crochet and her friends were honored every Christmas with a hand-crocheted snowflake. She was a self-taught juggler and a member of the International Jugglers Association.

Darcie is survived by her parents (Dorothy and Robert Arnold) of Sun City, AZ and her five siblings (Dawn, David, Dan, Dian and Dirk), nieces and nephews and her ever faithful companion Buddy.

There will be a memorial picnic to celebrate Darcie's life on July 31, 2011 at the Hidden Valley Regional Park from noon to 9pm. The original GNO will provide hamburgers, hot dogs and beverages. Please bring a dish and memories to share.

To Darcie's family I send sincere sympathy for your loss of a wonderful daughter and sister, aunt and friend. Darcie was very compassionate and loving when taking care of people. Before she left for Arizona, she cared for a dear friend by bringing her in to get her hair done every Friday. That is where I met Darcie and I grew to love her for the good person she was. She will surely be missed by me. Sincerely, Laura Laramie, from Sparks.

Although we will miss her wonderful spirit, I agree with Jeannie, Darcie is skiing all out with that huge smile on her face. Godspeed my friend.

We will miss Darcie so, but we know she is skiing like the dare-devil she once was, with great knees and the intense passion for speed!

I knew Darcie from the doctor's office I used to work for. She will be missed. She and I would share stories about our best fuzzy friends among other things. I'm so very sorry she's gone.
