Mary N. Chadwell

Mary N. Chadwell, 98, of Reno, Nevada, passed away at home on Wednesday, October 3, 2012.

A native of SLC, Utah and a Nevadan since 1933, Mary Chadwell was a truly amazing woman who touched the lives of many. She loved her family and her many friends and she will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

She was a woman of many talents, but was mostly known for her work in the art world. She was the recipient of prestigious awards and the subject of many exhibitions. She gained national recognition for her miniature painting. She won more than 187 awards, including 25 Best of Shows, in national and international competitions. Her work is included in the permanent collection of the NV State Legislature, Nevada Museum of Art, and the Miniature Art Society of Florida. Her work is also included in the World Federation of Miniaturists in Tasmania, Australia; London, England; and the Smithsonian Institute. In January of 2011, she was awarded the esteemed USA Award, sponsored by the Miniature Artists of America, for her "Lincoln Memorial" at the 36th International Art Competition of the Miniature Art Society of FL.

She was a member of the Miniature Artists of America; Whiskey Painters of America; Miniature Painters, Sculptors and Gravers Society of Washington, D.C.; Miniature Art Society of Florida; World Federation of Miniaturists; Latimer Art Club; Nevada Museum of Art; Sierra Arts Foundation; and the Artists Co-op Gallery of Reno (where she spent many happy hours with other local artists, and had her last show there in May). She was a member of the Reno First Congregational Church.

Surviving are: Daughters: Annette Marshall and Gail Herz; Sisters: Ida Otani, Joy King, and Mimi Davis; Grandson and wife: Shannon Chadwell and Sunshine Stevens; and Great grandson: Oskar Chadwell. Numerous nieces and nephews.

Predeceased by: Brothers: Roy and Art Nishiguchi; Sisters: Grace Nishiguchi and Bessie Allard; and Claude (Chad) Chadwell, her husband of 70 years, who passed in February of 2010.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, November 18, 2012 from 4:30-6:30 p.m. at McKinley Arts and Culture Center, 925 Riverside Drive, Reno, NV 89503.

I will always treasure the Mary Chadwell paintings in my collection. It was a delight to know her and to talk with her at openings at the Co-Op Gallery about her art. She will be missed. Nevada has lost a truly great artist and Nevadan.

It is with sadness that we read about Mary's passing. She was a very gracious woman and one of my favorite customers in our store, Oakmans. I have some of her miniatures and will always treasure them. Our prayers and deepest sympathy are with her family.
