Memorial service for Whitney LaRocque "Scooter" Powell will be held at Ross, Burke & Nobel Funeral Home, 2155 Kietzke Lane, Reno at 9:30am on Friday, February 15, 2013, with Reverend Ebb Fox officiating. Burial will be at Veteran's Memorial Cemetery in Fernley, Nevada at 2:30 pm the same day.
Miss Powell, 28, of Reno, Nevada, a very loving and vivacious young woman, died Thursday, February 7, 2013 at the University Medical Center in Jackson, Mississippi. Whitney was born July 8, 1984, in Reno, Nevada. She attended Orme School in Prescott, Arizona, and graduated from Reno High School 2003. Petty Officer 2nd Class Powell enlisted in the Navy in July, 2008. At Naval Air Station Meridian, she was 2010 Junior Sailor of the Year and recipient of the Naval & Marine Corps Achievement Medal. She also served as a member of the Navy Honor Guard. Whitney volunteered locally with the Lauderdale County Emergency Management Agency, and served as Chairman of the Naval Coalition of Sailors Against Destructive Decisions NAS Meridian. She attended Calvary Chapel of Meridian, Mississippi. Whitney was an organ donor and as a last selfless act in death, she prolonged the life of four other individuals.
Survivors include her father Willis E. "Bill" Powell and his wife Michelle; mother Rae Jean Powell; sister Jenvieve Bjornstad and her husband David; brother Nicholas E. Powell; nephew Austin Willis "Sprout" Bjornstad; grandfather Roger L. Powell and his wife Leslie all of Reno, NV; grandmothers Lucy Morando and Jo Anne Brewster of Preston, Idaho; and numerous aunts, uncles, relatives, and friends through out our great Nation. She was preceded in death by her grandfather Loren Eugene Brewster, a veteran, and grandmother Beatrice Mary LaRocque Powell.
