Ernest Eugene (Gene) Gilbert

December 23, 1926

February 24, 2013

Gene was born in 1926 in Corsicana, Texas to Ernest Eugene Gilbert, Sr. and Ora Odom Gilbert. His family later moved to Austin, Texas, where he, and his older brother, Robert Odom Gilbert, and younger sister, Jennie Wren Gilbert, attended school. When World War II began, Gene, like most young men at the time, was anxious to serve his country. Finally, on September 30, 1943, he joined the U.S. Navy after convincing a recruiter that he was old enough, although he hadn't finished high school and was less than the required 17 years old. He served with distinction in the Asiatic - Pacific area, where he received two bronze stars for action in Leyte Gulf and Okinawa. Gene received an honorable discharge April 10, 1946. After his service he returned to finish high school and attend two years of college. Gene then re-enlisted in the Navy, where he served in the submarine service during the Korean War and the Vietnam War. He retired with the rank of Chief Petty Officer after 20 years of service.

Gene passed away while living in retirement at the Cascades of the Sierra in Sparks, Nevada. His parents and older brother preceded him in death. He is survived by his sister, Jennie Ross, her husband, John Ross, and two of his nephews, John Ross and Scott Ross, who, with their wives, live in Reno. A third nephew, Daniel Ross, lives in Plano, Texas. Gene is also survived by Aline Gilbert, the widow of his late brother, Robert, and niece, Jennie Gilbert and nephew, Michael Gilbert of Bastrop, Texas.

Services will be conducted on Friday, March 1, 2013 at 10 am at Walton's Sierra Chapel, 875 West Second Street, Reno, NV. Interment will follow at noon at the Northern Nevada Veteran's Memorial Cemetery in Fernley, Nevada, with military honors rendered by the United States Navy.
