Mary Katherine "Katie" Amaral, 84, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, March 19, 2013. She was in her home in Reno.
Katie was born on October 20, 1928, in Cushing, Oklahoma, to Victor and Helen (Homan) Smith. She was the second of five children. In August of 1948 she married Don Amaral in Redlands, California. Don and Katie were married for 60 years. They moved to Reno from Hesperia, California in 1971. Home and family were very important to Katie and Don. They loved all of the various homes they built over the years in California and Nevada.
Katie worked as the executive secretary to the Washoe County School District Superintendant of Schools for 17 years, retiring in 1994. She attended First Christian Church and then First Evangelical Free Church for several years. Katie was very creative and was an excellent seamstress. Her hobbies were cooking, sewing and being with her family. Her home was her castle. She loved her job with the school district, and was known for being very practical, and a hard worker. She had a mischievous sense of humor and was always ready to make others laugh. Katie was a woman of character and integrity, and loved her family deeply. She was a faithful friend, and will be sorely missed by all who knew her.
Katie is survived by her son, Gary, of Reno; a granddaughter, Elicia Frazier and husband, Justin, of Columbia, Oregon; great-grandchildren, Jordan and Jaida Frazier, Columbia, Oregon; sisters, Martha Terrel and Carol Brockbank and husband, Tom; and brother, David Smith and wife, Roseanne, all of Medford, Oregon; as well as various nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Don, in 2008; and daughter, Brenda, in 1977.
A viewing will take place on Wednesday, March 27, 2013, beginning at 11:00 am, at Walton's Funeral Home, 875 West Second Street, Reno, followed by a short celebration of life at 1:00 pm. Interment will be at Mountain View Cemetery in Reno. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Committee to Aid Abused Women (CAAW), 1735 Vassar Street, Reno, Nevada, 89502; or the Verdi Fire Department, 100 Garson Road, Verdi, NV, 89439.
