Dennis Wayne Gartner

Dennis died at home in the loving care of his family on March 6, 2014 following a gallant six year battle with cancer. He was born on January 29, 1947 in Berkley, California to George and Ellen (Jones) Gartner. Dennis was the eldest of two children. He attended elementary school in Oakland and Piedmont, California. While in high school, Dennis played football. He graduated from Piedmont High School in 1964. He was so looking forward to attending his 50 year class reunion later this year. He attended Laney Junior College for a short time. Dennis was an accomplished musician, and a long-time member of the Weldonian Marching Band. He was also a member of the DeMolay during his teen years. Shortly after high school, he began his career with Pacific Bell. He enlisted in the US Army in 1968, and continued to serve into 1974. Dennis served in Radio Communications in Stuttgardt, Germany. He earned the National Defense Service Metal and Sharp Shooter M14 during his military service. Dennis was honored and proud to have served his country. After the Army, Dennis returned to working for Pacific Bell. Dennis met the love of his life, Pamela Sue (Lache) Gartner on October 11, 1973. They later married, after a 6 month engagement, on June 22, 1974 in San Lorenzo, California. Pam and Dennis initially resided for a short while in Hayward, California. The bought their first home in October, 1974 in Benicia, California. After 2½ years, they relocated to Vacaville, California. While living in Vacaville, they were blessed with their beautiful son, Timothy Ivan Gartner. In December of 1986, the family was transferred to Reno, Nevada by the phone company. Dennis retired, after 30+ years, from Lucent technology in 1995. After retiring from the phone company, he continued his career at John Ascuaga's Nugget for 10 years. Through out his career, Dennis made many long-time close friends. He was very respected and well-liked. He enjoyed fishing, Golf, sports, San Francisco 49er and UNR football, restoring his 1966 Chevy Malibu ("Popa's Old Car"), Hot August Nights, and traveling with his sweetheart. Dennis was a very proud member of The American Legion.

He is survived by his wife, Pam, of 39 years; son Timothy Ivan Gartner; daughter-in-law Julissa Ramirez-Gartner, three beautiful grandchildren-Dionee Alexander Cortes-Gartner (13), Dyanara Mia Ramirez-Gartner (7) and Dario Jovany Gartner (3); his sister Mrs. Sherri Corporandy (Tom), cousins-Steven Jones and Barbara Gallinitti, and close friends. Dennis was preceded in death by his parents, George and Ellen Gartner.

There will be a public viewing held at Ross, Burke and Knobel Mortuary at 2155 Kietzke Lane in Reno, Nevada on Tuesday, March 11, 2014 from 6 to 8 P.M. A celebration service of Dennis' life will follow on Wednesday, March 12, 2014 at 10:30 A.M. at Ross, Burke and Knobel Mortuary. Immediately following the service there will be a reception. A short military graveside service is scheduled for 2 PM on March 12, 2014 at Northern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery at 14 Veterans Way in Fernley, Nevada. In lieu of flowers donate to the so that no other family has to loose a loved one to cancer.
