Shtenko, Valentin W.
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Valentin Walter Shtenko on May 15, 2015 at the age of 79. He is survived by his wife of 26 years, Beverley Dunphy; his son Paul, wife Karen and her son Bryan; his son Mark, wife Lucy and their children Ella, Mia and Max.  His father Makar, and his sister Ria, also survive him.  Valentin was born July 8, 1935 in the Ukraine and immigrated to Canada when he was three. He attended the University of Saskatchewan in Civil Engineering. After graduation he worked for the PFRA in Saskatoon and Penticton. Before moving on to Vancouver, Valentin taught at The Kelsey Institute of Saskatoon, which he always said was the most difficult work he ever did. In the early '70s, Valentin moved with his family to Vancouver to become Chief Engineer with BC Railway.  After sixteen years with BCR Valentin broadened his horizons and worked for CIDA in Zimbabwe and Mozambique. Valentin continued his railway engineering with Canarail on projects in Armenia, Venezuela, Argentina, Columbia, Bangladesh and Kenya. Valentin always maintained his commitment to the farm and in later years he spent more time working with his sons on the family property.  Having his sons involved with him on the farm gave him a sense of pride and satisfaction and he particularly enjoyed those years.  The family would like to thank all the medical staff, who cared for Valentin at Lion's Gate Hospital and especially those who looked after him at the North Shore Hospice.  A Celebration of Life will be held on May 29 at 2:00 pm at the Boal Chapel, 1505 Lillooet Rd., North Vancouver. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the BC Stroke Foundation.
