Passed away peacefully at Lynn Valley Care Centre with his family by his side. He is survived by his wife of nearly 64 years, Helen, his son Dave, daughter-in-law Louise, granddaughter Dara (Alec Lewis and children Cameron and Kiera) and grandson Adam. Also survived by his daughter Carol, son-in-law Joe Bell, grandsons Mac and Casey, as well as extended family both here and back east. Don was born in the village of Burk's Falls, Ontario, and spent many summers at Horne Lake. When WWII broke out, he joined the Merchant Marine and travelled throughout the world delivering supplies to the troops. At war's end, he decided to come out to BC, where he met his one love, Helen, at the old Lonsdale Theater. After a marriage that the neighbours said would never last, they moved briefly to Nanaimo and then back to North Van. Don was employed for many years by Shell Canada, after which he set up his own sulphur shipping business until retirement. Dad was a very capable man who built several houses during his lifetime, as well as helping friends and neighbours with the construction of various cabins, furniture pieces, and garden projects. He loved watching hockey and football, and enjoyed bike riding, cross country skiing, and collecting stamps. He played a good game of bridge and taught his grandsons to play crib. His love of travel took Helen and him to many places around the globe in addition to their regular winter visits to Maui. His family extends its deepest thanks to Dr. B. Norton and the wonderful staff at Lynn Valley Care, who always treated Don with kindness and respect. Dad did not want a service, but anyone wishing could donate to the B.C. SPCA in his memory.
