Carl Thomas Melhorn

Carl Thomas Melhorn, the son of the late Henry T. Melhorn and Maggie Main Melhorn, was born June 24, 1930, in Rockwood, and passed away in Ardmore, Okla., on Saturday, Nov. 3, 2012, at home with his family.
He grew up in Rockwood, where he graduated from Rockwood High School. He received his bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from Tennessee Tech in Cookeville. He obtained his master's degree in education from Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, Okla. He worked on his doctorate degree in electrical engineering at the University of West Virginia. He moved his family and went to work for Boeing Aircraft in Wichita, Kan., after completion of his bachelor's degree. He was at Boeing for about a year and decided, "I don't want to be just a pencil pusher," and embarked on a career in education. He loved teaching. His teaching career expanded more than 30 years, having taught at Hutchinson Kansas Junior College, Eastern State College in Wilburton, Okla., Pittsburg State College of Pittsburg, Kan., and Montgomery County Vocational School in Dayton, Ohio. He enjoyed fishing, playing cards and camping. He also loved being with his daughters and their families, especially with grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He served his country in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War, receiving the Korean Service Ribbon, United Nations Service Medal, China Service Medal, Navy Occupation Medal and an honorable discharge. He was a lifetime member of VFW Post 4782, where he was post commander, and Post 5018 in Dayton, Ohio, where he served as post surgeon.
Survivors include his daughters and their families, Linda Lea Vaughn and husband Lloyd, Ardmore, and their children and grandchildren, Brent and wife Aimee Murphree, children Brock Murphree, MacKenzie Murphree, Brooke Murphree, Chance Murphree, Kent Murphree and wife Sue Murphree, children Jackson Murphree, Reid Murphree and Garette Murphree, Danyelle Vaughn, children Blake Faulkner and Nikki "Missy" Faulkner, Lindsey Vaughn and wife Rommye Vaughn, child Kaitlyn Vaughn, Randy Germany and wife Peggy Germany, children Bradley Germany and Karamee Germany, Donna Gail Banks and husband Ron of Oklahoma City, Okla., and their children and grandchildren, Todd Akins and wife Tonya, children Ashley Cameron, Jonathan Cameron and Whitney Akins, Ella Jean "Jeannie" Messina and husband Louis "Butch" Messina, Katy, Texas, and their children and grandchildren, Michael Messina, child Liv Messina, Jamie Messina Beller and husband Josh, children Garette Beller, Sophia Beller, Graham Beller; sisters, Margie Henderson and husband Frank, Jasper, Tenn., and Dorothy Arms, Poteau, Okla.; brother, Richard Melhorn, Las Vegas; numerous nieces and nephews he loved so much; special people, Lawrence Greger, guardian and friend, and Nancy and Tony Sullivan, who helped care for him throughout his illness; and many special friends he made during his time in Ardmore.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a grandson, Wayne Pattison; a sister, Jean Majors; and grandparents, Gus and Martha Melhorn.
The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 10, in Evans Mortuary, Rockwood. Graveside service will follow at Oak Grove Cemetery with full military honors. Honorary pallbearers will be grandsons, Brent Murphree, Kent Murphree, Todd Akins, Michael Messina, Lindsey Vaughn, Randy Germany. Pallbearers at graveside services will be members of VFW Post 4782.
