James David Sweeney, 87, of Kingston, passed away Friday, March 1, 2013, in University of Tennessee Medical Center.
He was a 56-year member of Kingston First Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon and treasurer for many years. He worked for 35 years at Y-12 in Oak Ridge. He loved being a volunteer at Hands of Mercy, where he served on the board of directors. He graduated from the University of Tennessee with a degree in mechanical engineering and served in the U.S. Navy
in World War II
. For those who knew him, he will be remembered as a man of incredible faith, knowing his Lord walked the journey of life with him every day. His love for his church, family and friends was well known. He was preceded in death by parents, R.W. and Beulah Sweeney; brothers, Claude, Guy, R.W. Jr. and Roy; and sisters Thelma and May.
Survivors include his loving wife, Alice McKenzie Sweeney, Kingston, to whom he was a devoted husband for 57 years; daughter, Lou Alice White (John), Lake Charles, La.; son, David Alan Sweeney (Tonia), Winchester, Va.; and grandchildren, Tyler and Paul Sweeney, Paul and Stephen White.
Services were Tuesday, March 5, in Kingston First Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to either Kingston First Baptist Church Building Fund or Hands of Mercy, 147 Court St., Kingston, TN 37763 in his honor are appreciated.
