Joyce Duffield Henley

Joyce Duffield Henley, 84, passed away on Friday, Sept. 28, 2012, at The Oaks at Limestone in Gainesville, Ga.
Born in Butler, Tenn., she was the daughter of the late Clay Evans Duffield and the late Dorothy Millsaps Duffield. She was the loving and devoted wife of Willis H. "Chile" Henley for 50 years until his death in 2004. She received a B.A. in English from Carson-Newman College and did post-graduate studies at Emory University and the University of Georgia. She impacted the lives of so many children during her 47-year teaching career, which began at Harriman High School in Harriman. She used to recall that when she started teaching, some of her students, World War II veterans returning home to finish their education, were older than she was. She also taught seventh-grade English and math for 22 years in DeKalb County, Ga., where she was known as a dedicated educator who instilled discipline and high standards in her classroom. When she and her husband moved back to Roane County, she continued to teach, and many of her new students were the children of her former pupils. In 1982, she received the Distinguished Faculty Award while teaching at TMI in Sweetwater. Education was her passion, but she was also an accomplished seamstress, pianist and organist, and an avid University of Tennessee sports fan.
She is survived by her daughter, Dottie H. Williams (Monty); son, Willis H. "Bill" Henley Jr. (Pam); stepdaughter, Dianne Hamrick (Ken); stepson, Randall Henley (Debbie); eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents and husband, she is predeceased by daughter, Cindy Henley; and grandson, Michael Hamrick.
The service will be at 3 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 4, Kyker Funeral Home chapel, Harriman. Burial at Willard Park Cemetery will immediately follow. The service will be conducted by the Rev. Mason Goodman. The family will receive friends from 1 to 3 p.m. prior to the service on Thursday in Kyker Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Pat Summitt Foundation for Alzheimer's disease research and support at
