Nancy Barnett Banker of Boulder, Colo., passed away peacefully in Boulder Community Hospital on Monday, March 18, 2013.
She will be deeply missed by her family and her many friends in Colorado and around the world. She was born Feb. 15, 1949, in Harriman to Ruth and Leamon Barnett. In 1967, she met the love of her life, John. They married in June 1969 and enjoyed a fairytale life. In the ensuing years, they moved around the eastern U.S. pursuing his career as a metallurgist specializing in explosion welding. Their last big move was to Boulder in 1977 to join the young team at Explosive Fabricators in Louisville, now Dynamic Materials. In their early years with EFI, she helped the production team on busy days, photographically chronicled that era and hosted many of the social events of the young company. In those years, they lived at the top of Lee Hill, where she developed a deep love for the Colorado Mountains, the bounteous wildflowers and the many creatures of the wild. During her early "Mom" years, she was the receptionist and office manager at Boulder Country Day School. Since 1996, she and John had worked together at Clad Metal Products and then Dynamic Materials, where she had been the office manager and "mom" to the global Clad Metal Sales team for 13 years. Their children, Laurel Beeken and Jeremy Banker, both live in Berthoud, Colo., with their spouses. Grandson Elliott, born in 2010, was the charmer of her life.
For many years, she had worked actively with the Eye Health Institute, a Boulder-based nonprofit that provides eye health support in rural Jamaica. The travels in the Jamaican mountains and loving relations with many there were some of her fondest memories.
More recently, she and her family had enjoyed every available spare hour at their mountain hideaway in the Elk Park Ranch area near Allenspark, Colo. The flowers of the meadows and God's little creatures of the forest and rocks continued to give her huge joy.
Nancy is survived by her mother, Ruth Barnett, Rockwood; husband, John, Boulder; daughter, Laurel, her husband Jonah and son Elliott, Berthoud; and son Jeremy and wife Elise, also of Berthoud.
John and Laurel will host a celebration of Nancy's life for her East Tennessee friends at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 3, in Bethel Presbyterian Church fellowship hall, Kingston.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Eye Health Institute, P.O. Box 11052, Boulder, CO 80301.
