Rachel LeNell Mathews, 79, of Kingston, passed away Saturday, Aug. 18, 2012, at her home surrounded by her loving family.
She was born Dec. 9, 1932, in Coal Valley, Ala. She was a member of Central Baptist Church in Kingston, where she had taught Sunday school and was a member of WMU. She was a very dedicated Christian and very strong in her faith. Rachel had worked as a Vista coordinator at Kingston Elementary School and enjoyed that time of her life very much. She was an avid gardener and treasured each moment spent with her family and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, William Franklin and Lovie Gordon Lawrence; a sister, Lois Lawrence; and a brother, Eugene Lawrence.
Survivors include her loving husband of 58 years, James T. Mathews Jr., Kingston; three children, Rebecca Lovie Spurgin and husband Johnny, Flat Rock, Ala., Leticia Mae Durham and husband Timmy, Waverly, and James Thomas Mathews, III and wife Marsha, Kingston; six grandchildren, Justin Spurgin and wife Diana, Bealsville, Ohio, Rachel Blevins and husband Patrick, Flat Rock, Lindsey Durham, Waverly, Chad Durham, Waverly, Thomas Mathews IV, Kingston, and Taylor Mathews, Kingston; a brother, William Gordon Lawrence, Stevenson, Ala.; a sister, Louise Luntsford and husband Ronnie, Soddy-Daisy; three sisters-in-law, Betty Harvey, Edith Bullinton, both of McEwen, and Lois Carson and husband Kit, McEwen; a brother-in-law, Buddy Mathews and wife Pat, Waverly; several nieces, nephews and a host of very special friends.
The family received friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 19, in Central Baptist Church in Kingston, with funeral service following at 7 p.m. with Pastor Brent Forsythe, Bro. Justin Spurgin and Bro. Lane Parkison officiating. Visitation in Waverly was from 3 to 7 p.m. Monday, Aug. 20, at Waverly First Baptist Church. Funeral service followed at 7 p.m. in the church sanctuary. Burial was at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 21, at Mathews Cemetery in Waverly. Fraker Funeral Home, Kingston, was in charge of arrangements.
