Walter T. Powell, 87, of Rockwood, passed away Thursday, March 28, 2013, at home.
He was a well-known wood carver and Bluegrass/gospel musician. A U.S. Army
veteran, he was of the Baptist faith. He was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Annie Powell; and a brother, Leland Powell.
Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Mona Watson Powell, Rockwood; sons, Stanley Powell, Rockwood, and Terry Powell (Stacy), Kingston; twin grandchildren, Ginger Powell and Suzanne Best (Travis), Lenoir City; sisters-in-law, Irene Helton, Oakdale, Dot Summers, Oakdale, Gladys Dalton (Jim), Harriman, June Horton (Bobby), Oakdale; devoted friends Gene Lawson, Rockwood, and Freida Grant, Rockwood; sister-in-law, Jimmie Jean Booth, Rockwood; nephew and niece, Roger Powell and Elizabeth Futtrell; several other nieces and nephews.
The family received friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, April 1, in Evans Mortuary, Rockwood. Funeral service followed, with the Revs. Shawn Durham and Chuck Willburn officiating. Burial was at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 2, at Pine Orchard Cemetery, with military honors by the Roane County Military Memorial Honor Guard.
