Billy Reed Leffew passed away early Saturday morning, June 15, 2013, in Methodist Medical Center after an extended illness.
He joined the U.S. Navy after graduating from South Harriman High School, serving in the Korean Conflict. Upon completion of his tour, he went to work for Delta Airlines in Atlanta.
He received a Bachelor of Science in biology and a Master of Science in social work from the University of Tennessee. After graduation, he taught biology at Oak Ridge High School and then worked for the Tennessee Department of Human Services. Upon retirement from the state, he stayed busy by tending to his family, farm and church.
He was a member of South Harriman Baptist Church, Harriman. He will be missed by his family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Reed Leffew, Mobile, Ala.; sister, Pat Williams, Mobile; brother, Mickey Leffew, Mobile; and first wife, Vivian Harmon Leffew.
He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Robbie Leffew, Harriman; son, Scott Leffew (wife Jane), Nashville; daughters, Beth Allen (husband Mark), Santa Fe, N.M., and Angela Gibson, Knoxville; grandchildren, Joel Leffew, Knoxville, Lauren Leffew, Nashville, Patrick Allen (wife Mollie), Collierville, Tenn., Sarah Kennedy (husband Matt), Dallas, and Robert H. Gibson IV, Knoxville; and great-grandson, Caleb Reed Leffew, Nashville.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete at this time. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to either South Harriman Baptist Church, Harriman, or the , Knoxville. Evans Mortuary, Rockwood, is in charge of arrangements. Service information and an online register are available at
