Daniel Thomas Moates, 89, of Knoxville, passed away on Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2013.

He was born in Etowah on May 9, 1924. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy on the USS Brazos during World War II and later retired from a lifelong career at BellSouth. He was married to Thelma Duff Moates. They were married almost 30 years and lived most of these years in Harriman. He was a widower to Margaret Moates. He had been an avid runner, cyclist and hiker. He ran in many local marathons, as well as hiking the Appalachian Trail and Mount Rainer in Washington state.
He is survived by wife, Thelma Moates; brothers, James Moates and Joe Moates (Elizabeth); sister, Catherine Elkins; children, Debra West and Michael Moates; stepchildren, Ken, Jeff, John and Joel Evans; grandchildren, Miranda, Micki, Heather, Chance, Kristi, Stephanie, Lindsay, Justin, Josh, Jacob, Chance, Jay, Alexa, Isaac and Matt; as well as other family and friends.
He will be laid to rest with full military honors at East Tennessee State Veterans Cemetery, 2200 Gov. John Sevier Hwy. The family and friends will gather there at 11:30 a.m. Monday, Sept. 30. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Parkinson's Research, such as the Michael J. Fox Foundation or other similar foundation.
