Retired U.S. Army Sgt. 1st Class Grant Jackson "Jack" Capps, 84, of Kingston, passed away Friday, June 21, 2013, in University of Tennessee Medical Center, Knoxville.
He was born April 28, 1929 in Rockwood to Mark Capps and Mary Ethel Adcox Capps. He was a retired sergeant first class with the U.S. Army, serving in the Korean War and the Vietnam War. He was also a retired instrument mechanic with the U.S. Department of Energy's Y-12 Plant. He attended New Hope Baptist Church in Rockwood and was a member of the American Legion. He was an avid golfer and gardener and loved his grandchildren dearly. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Linda Gail Fritts; granddaughter, Stephanie Edwards Hinds; and sister, Mildred Brown.
Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Alice "Juanita" Capps, Kingston; children, Jerry Capps, Kingston, Mary Edwards and husband, Jim, Rockwood, and David Capps and wife Mary, Kingston; grandchildren, Jamie Edwards Heffron and husband, Jonah, David Justin Capps, Hallie Grace Capps, Miranda "Mandy" Price and husband Shawn, Christopher Fritts and Rebecca Fritts; great-grandchildren, Kaylee, Kolton, Kennedi, Brooklyn, Miranda, Zander, Zevin, Keyton, and Kyler; three half-brothers; several nieces and nephews.
The family received friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, June 23, in Evans Mortuary, Rockwood. Funeral services followed at 7 p.m. Sunday, June 23, from the chapel of Evans Mortuary, with Bro. Bill Brown officiating. Graveside services and burial were at 10 a.m. Monday, June 24, at Oak Grove Cemetery in Rockwood, with full military honors by the Volunteer State Veterans Honor Guard.
