Helen Leona Stringfield Hicks, 80, of Harriman, died Sunday afternoon, Feb. 24, 2013, in Methodist Medical Center in Oak Ridge.

She was born Sept. 20, 1932, in Morgan County to Joseph Walter and Mede Underwood Stringfield. She was a member of and attended Mount Pisgah Baptist Church in Oliver Springs until her health deteriorated. She was a big fan of University of Tennessee sports, especially football, and was almost always dressed in some type of Tennessee orange and white. She was preceded in death by her parents, the Rev. J.W. and Meda Stringfield; sister, Hazel May; two brothers, Herschel Stringfield and Leslie Underwood; three brothers-in-law, R.C. May, James Mays and Talmadge Davis; and two nephews, Charles Underwood and Jimmy Mays.
She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Paul L. Hicks Sr.; son, Paul L. Hicks Jr. (Donna); sisters, Shirley Mays, Lima, Ohio, and Merolene Davis of Camilla, Ga.; brother, J.C. Stringfield, Lancing; sisters-in-law, Aliene Underwood, Lancing, JoAnn Stringfield, Weed, N.M., Mary Jo Ellis (Billy), Lancing, Joyce Hicks, Harriman, and Maeagile Stringfield, Wartburg; brother-in-law, Roy Hicks (Betty), Spring City; two grandchildren, Joshua Inman and Amanda Lowe; five great-grandchildren; special niece and flower girl at her wedding 60 years ago, Phyllis Mutz (Larry); many, many nieces, nephews and their families, cousins and friends, all of whom she cherished.
The family received friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 26, in Schubert Funeral Home, Wartburg. Funeral services followed at 8 p.m., with the Rev. Perry Spurling officiating. Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 27, at Lane Cemetery.
