Joe Major Underwood "Papa Joe", 89, of Harriman, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2013, at his home with family by his side.
He was born Sept. 19, 1923, in Sunbright to Osda Beaty and Lonous Underwood Sr. and was of the Baptist faith. He served in World War II with 4th Armored Infantry Division and was a Purple Heart recipient. He was preceded in death by his parents, Osda Beaty and Lonous Underwood Sr.; brothers, Shade Underwood Sr. and Lonous Underwood Jr.; sisters, Nellie Underwood Jones, Lily Jean Underwood, Elizabeth "Libby" Underwood Dean; and brother-in-law, Bodo Seibert.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Trudy Seibert Underwood; sons, Dennis Underwood, Harriman, and Wayne Underwood (Sharon), Knoxville; daughter, Darlene Heiser (Steve), Powell; grandchildren, Joshua Heiser (Leslie), Knoxville, Jacob Heiser (Kathy), Corryton, and Julie Heiser, Panama City, Fla.; great-grandchildren, Braden, Kaitlynn and Grayson Heiser; sister, Lou Collier, Indian Harbor, Fla.; sisters-in-law, Christel Brunner, Heppenheim, Germany, Gladys Underwood, Livionia, Mich., and Maeona Underwood, Wartburg; brother-in-law, James Dean, Midtown; a host of nieces and nephews.
Graveside service will be at Oak Ridge Memorial Park with full military honors and a dove release at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 10. Pallbearers will be Steve, Joshua, and Jacob Heiser, James E. Jones and David Underwood. Honorary pallbearers will be Braden, Kaitlynn and Grayson Heiser. Kyker Funeral Home, Harriman, is in charge of arrangements.
