John W. Harvey Smith of Knoxville died Wednesday, Nov. 27, 2013.
He graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1950, and was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War. After military service, he returned to Roane County to enter business with his father-in-law, James David Christmas, at Christmas Lumber Co. He was the long-time chairman and president and remained employed by Christmas Lumber Co. until his death. He was preceded in death by his two beautiful and loving wives, Lovelle Christmas Smith and Martha Lynn Bondurant Smith; his parents, Major Francis Marion Smith and Jessie Harvey Smith of the Cave Creek Community in Roane County; his brother, Col. Francis Marion Smith Jr.; and his sister, Mae Smith Emery.
He is survived by three daughters, Deborah S. Lutz, Sally S. Cleveland and Tracy L. Smith; stepdaughter Sarah B. Yoakley and husband Douglas; grandchildren, Theron Cleveland IV, Emily Cleveland, William Hamilton and wife Andrea, Kathryn Hamilton and John Lutz; stepgrandchildren, Taylor Yoakley and wife Allison, Jordan Yoakley and Megan Yoakley; nieces and nephews, James Francis Emery, Frank Marsh Smith and Rachel H. Emery.
Family and friends gathered for a graveside service at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 30, at Cave Creek Cemetery, Roane County, with Dr. Luder G. Whitlock officiated.
