Mary Jo "Jodie" Pickel, 65, of Harriman, born May 16, 1947, in Charles H. Bacon Hospital, Loudon, passed away Saturday, June 16, 2012, in Methodist Medical Center, Oak Ridge.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Roberta Hedgecock Pickel Payne; maternal grandparents, the Rev. Ernest and Nettie Bailes Hedgecock; paternal grandparents, Gilbert and Eva DeRieux Pickel; and her namesakes and family friends, Mary and Joe McKinney of Lenoir City.
She is survived by her father and stepmother, Gilbert DeRieux Pickel and Linda Bryant Pickel; a special aunt, Louise Pickel; a brother and sister-in-law, James William Pickel and Marcia Wyatt Pickel; a foster daughter, Connie Hilemon Curtis and granddaughter Krista Marie Curtis, Lenoir City, a niece, Mary Lynn Pickel Huett and husband Jeff Huett, Falls Church, Va.; a nephew, Robert Wyatt Pickel, and wife Maria Pickel; great-nephews, Alexander Wyatt Pickel, and James Parker Huett; and great-niece, Katherine Isabel Pickel.
Jodie's years of playing high school basketball, gave her a strong admiration for the Lady Vols and Coach Pat Summitt. Although poor health prevented her from attending the games, the staff and management of Harriman Care and Rehabilitation made it possible for her to enjoy all televised games. Jodie's wonderful sense of humor and her acceptance of differences in people was a defining characteristic of who she was. She never met a stranger, and she was dearly loved by her friends and family.
