Mike was born on July 23, 1954, in Athens, but lived most of his early years in Eureka. He was a member of the First Christian Church, participated in youth activities such as his high school band and the Boy Scouts, where he earned the rank of Eagle Scout. He graduated from Rockwood High School and in 1976 from Middle Tennessee State University with a bachelor's degree in music. While in college, he took a summer job in a magic shop in Gatlinburg. It was there that the "magic bug" bit him, never to turn loose! Although he kept his love and respect for music, he devoted his professional life to performing magic and mentoring new recruits to his chosen field. He went where ever "magic" led him â€" Myrtle Beach, Atlanta, St. Thomas, New Orleans, Washington, D.C., Honolulu and Las Vegas, to mention a few. He never passed up a chance to entertain and fascinate children, friends and relatives at parties, reunions and other gatherings. No matter where he went or how long or brief his stay, he quickly made friendships that endured the rest of his life. As news of Mike's death spread, his Facebook page filled with posts from friends around the world â€" all attesting to the depth, value and lasting significance of the friendships.
A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. May 31 in First Christian Church in Rockwood, followed by interment of his ashes at Abston/Lingo Cemetery in Westel.
