Nellie Louise Hardy Cleveland, 89, lovingly known as "Mamma Nell" and "Nanny," of Loudon, took off mortality and put on immortality on Wednesday morning, Feb. 27, 2013, in Harriman Care and Rehabilitation Center following a lengthy illness.

She was one of 12 children born to the late Columbus and Elizabeth Deathridge Hardy. She was a graduate of Pearl High School, Nashville. She was a faithful and dedicated member of Cedar Grove Baptist Church, where she served as Sunday school teacher, program chairwoman and kitchen committee until her health began to fail. She was active in the Missionary Society. She served many years as a board member of Mid-East Action Community Agency. She was very active with the Loudon District Association.
In addition to her parents she was preceded by her husband, Eli "Phil" Cleveland; son, Paul Jerry Batey; grandson, Patrick "Oz" Batey; brothers; John, William Jr. and Virgil Hardy; and sisters, Mary Kate Clark, Florence Moore, Bonnie Kline, Beatrice Vaughter and Rose Sadler.
She leaves to cherish her loving memory devoted daughter-in-law, Margie Moore, Harriman; sons, Robert Batey (Nida), Vacaville, Calif., and Donald Cleveland (Mary), Chattanooga; eight grandchildren, Yalonda and Shawn Batey, California, Tisa Batey Walker, Atlanta, Monique "Nikie" Batey, Fayetteville, Ga., Yalanda Collier (Kerry), St. Louis, Veta Crosswhite, St. Louis, Dwight Crosswhite, Knoxville, and Steven Crosswhite, Nashville; 12 great-grandchildren; sisters, Geneva Rowland (Charles), Addie Houston, Dayton, Ohio, and Beulah Black, Alcoa; sisters-in-law, Margaret and Christine Cleveland, Philadelphia; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
The family will receive friends from noon to 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 5, prior to funeral services at 2 p.m. in Loudon Funeral Home chapel. Burial will be at Cedar Grove Cemetery. www.loudonfuneralhome.net.
