Stephen Murray Hixson, 61, died Monday, May 5, 2014, at his home on Paint Rock Ferry Road, Kingston.

Steve was employed by B&W Y-12 Plant from 1987-97 and again from 2002 to present date (and formerly Lockheed Martin Energy Systems) in utility and chemical operations, as well as a former security officer, a former member of the International Guard Union, former member of the Oil Chemical and Atomic Workers Union at K-25 Plant, prior to experiencing declining health issues. He graduated from Rockwood High School in 1971 and attended Roane State Community College, studying police science and criminology. Steve was a veteran, serving the country in the U.S. Air Force from 1972-76, and served several years as Air National Guard. He served as deputy sheriff and policeman for Roane County Sheriff's Office and Rockwood Police Department from 1978 to 1985, respectively. He held certifications in commercial driver's license, OSHA, radiological worker, hazardous materials technician, fixed/portable fire extinguisher specialist, vitrification processes, and steam plant operations as well as many years with Kendrick Trucking, TAG Transport, Crete Carrier Corp., Bionomics, McElroy, Volunteer Transport and Ruan Transport, along with a stint as body guard and security specialist for Roger Penske in Houston. Steve excelled in marksmanship competitions in Albuquerque and had many ribbons and trophies to his credit as an expert marksman. He was a member of the VFW, American Legion and an avid Alabama fan. He is most proud of his children and grandsons. He was preceded in death by his father, the Rev. Charles T. Hixson; mother, Mabel E. Coffey Hixson; brothers, Larry M. Hixson, Ronald A. Hixson and Dennis M. Hixson.
Survivors include son, Carey E. Hixson and wife Ada, Rockwood; daughter, Jessica Hixson Knowlton and husband Jason of U.S. Fort Riley Army Base, Kan., and Lindsey Hixson, Orange Park, Fla.; grandsons, Allie, Brady, Garrett, Jett and Evan; sister, Teresa Hixson Riggs and husband Ray, Loudon; sisters-in-law, Henrietta Hixson, Kingsport, Linda Hixson, Bristol, and Ann Hixson Weiss, Germantown; many wonderful nieces and nephews; and good friend, Carson Grant.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, May 9, in Evans Mortuary, Rockwood. Funeral service will follow at 8 p.m. in the chapel, with Pastor Billy Joe Vitatoe officiating.
