The Rev John L. McCormick Jr., 83, of Harriman, went to be with the Lord on April 3, 2014, after a long struggle with cancer.
The Guest Book is expired.
John was a minister of the gospel for 52 years and had pastored many churches in Roane, Morgan and Cumberland counties. His greatest joy was to witness about the salvation message and never missed an opportunity to do so. His latest message was presented from his hospice bed, where he never complained but told anyone who would listen to the story of Jesus.
He was preceded in death by wife of 62 years, Allene McCormick.; his parents, John L. Sr. and Gracie Potter McCormick; and two brothers, George Correl and August McCormick.
He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Diane and David Mayton; granddaughters, Christy Harrison and husband Tony and Claudia Baber and husband Chris; four grandchildren, Tyler and David Gresham, Emma Baber and Madie Harrison; also two additional great-granddaughters by marriage, Kaylyn Hayes and husband Cory and Savanna Smith; two brothers, Charles and Christopher McCormick; three sisters, Geneva Potter, Helena Nelson and Juanita McCormick; two special sisters-in-law, Orba Welch and husband Jack, Clata Perry and husband James; and a special brother-in-law, Gene Allred and wife Joyce. John is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday April 5, in Swan Pond Baptist Church in Harriman. A celebration service will be at 2 p.m., with the Rev. Larry Tilley and Bro. Vic Davis officiating and Tony Harrison leading the music. Burial will follow at Swan Pond Cemetery. The family invites all of those who knew and loved "Bro. John" to come celebrate and praise the Lord he loved. John McCormick's hope was in the gospel that said, "Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am chief." 1 Timothy 1:15.
