George Woody, 94, of Kingston, passed away Wednesday, May 28, 2014, at his home surrounded by his family.
He was born April 13, 1920, in Paint Rock and was a lifelong resident of Roane County. In 1970, he and his wife founded High Ridge Baptist Church, which was their life. He was the oldest living charter member and a faithful deacon who lived a dedicated Christian life, with his desire more than anything to see souls saved and for the church to grow and be a shining light in the community. Not only did he love his family, but he loved his church family and friends. George owned and operated a saw mill for many years and was a carpenter by trade. He was also an avid dog trader and enjoyed rabbit hunting with his beagles. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 69 years, Gertrude Lynn Woody; daughter, Delilah Woody; grandson, Michael Woody; parents, John and Elizabeth Miller Woody; and sisters, Robbie Bostic, Frankie Wood and Eva Bagwell.
Survivors include children, Ronald Woody and wife Sheila, Lenoir City; Dwight Woody and wife Jody, Winder, Ga., Melvin Woody and wife Melody, Loganville, Ga.,Sandra Alexander and husband Raymond, Kingston, Angelia Zehner and husband Joe, Kingston, Keevin Woody and wife Janet, Kingston, and Trina Clower and husband Howard, Kingston; grandchildren, Emily Woody, Dwight Woody Jr., Van Woody, Jill Allen, Laura Woody, Jeff Woody, Suzannah Alexander, Joseph Alexander, Aaron Woody, Miranda Clower, Jacob Clower and Lucas Clower; five great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; brother, J.C. Woody, Loudon; sisters, Mary Christian, Loudon, Ruth Miller and husband Russell, Spring Hill, and Tika Bright, Loudon; brother-in-law, Jack Moore, Kingston; a host of extended family and friends.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, May 30, in High Ridge Baptist Church, with funeral service following at 8 p.m., with Bro. Taylor Adams, Bro. Keith Bailey and Bro. Grant Carter officiating. Graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at High Ridge Baptist Church Cemetery. An online register book can be signed at Fraker Funeral Home, Kingston, is in charge of arrangements.
