She was born in Kingston, on April 13, 1926. She was the daughter of the late Edgar V. and Bernice Frye McCollum. Mrs. Bailey was 10 years old when the family moved to Rockwood, where she attended school and graduated from Rockwood High in 1944. She continued her education at Mars Hill College in North Carolina and the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, where she received her bachelor of science and master's degree in education. Mrs. Bailey taught school for many years in Roane County and Long Island, New York. She left a legacy of believing in the value of education and she demonstrated strength of character that will carry on in future generations. After entering an assisted living facility at age 87, she still continued to teach her love of reading skills to stroke residents. Hesta was a member of Roane County Retired Teachers Association, Delta Kappa Gamma Society International NU Chapter. Mrs. Bailey and her late husband, Joe, were active members and volunteers of the First Baptist Church of Rockwood. She loved serving the Lord and sharing the hope of Christ throughout her church. She was active in mission work locally and in surrounding states. She knew her Bible and read it daily. "No one has a greater heart for missions than Mrs. Hesta." While living in New York, Mrs. Bailey provided families opportunities to take in all the sights, places and events that the city had to offer. Hesta believed that our lives had a purpose that was bigger than just about ourselves. One of her greatest joys in life was to give to the needs of people that she knew and did not know. John 3:16: For God so LOVED spelled GIVE. Hesta was such an incredible person in many ways. She is preceded in death by her husband, Joe Bailey, Jr. (2006); son, Dennis Bailey (1999); brother, Hershel V. McCollum (2009).
Survivors include sons, Stanley and wife Barbara of Bonham, Texas (who were her special caregivers the last 2 years), Ben Bailey and wife Elise of Dallas, Oregon; granddaughter, Kendra Thomas and husband Kenneth; 5 great grandchildren; brother, George Edd McCollum and wife Velma of Athens; sister-in-law, Katie Bailey Randolph of Rockwood; brother-in-law, O.D.
