Lurlene "Lou" Hendon Roper, a blessing to all who knew her, passed away Monday, July 7, 2014, at the age of 95, at Methodist Medical Center in Oak Ridge.

She was born in 1919 at the family home in Fayette County, Ala. She moved to the "gated city" of Oak Ridge in 1946, where she began employment and worked her way up to head telephone operator at the old Army hospital.
She was a charter member of Highland View Church of Christ in Oak Ridge and, for the last two years, she attended Kingston Church of Christ. She was a faithful servant of God, and she led her family by walking in faith.
Additionally, she was a charter member of the Historical Society of Oak Ridge (Wildcat Den). She worked for 51 years at the Oak Ridge Hospital, which later became Methodist Medical Center. She also spent many hours at the hospital working in the Volunteer office.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Porter Bervil and Maudie Katherine Oakley Hendon; sisters, Juanita Easley, Lenoir City, Patricia Ann Hutson, Mulberry, Fla., and Imogene Brown, Oliver Springs; a brother, Jack Dempsey Hendon, Granite City, Ill.; and a half-brother, David Lacy Norris, Oak Ridge.
Mrs. Roper is survived by a devoted son, Jimmy Roper, Oak Ridge; a grandson, Tommy Roper, Knoxville; a granddaughter, Elise Eaton and husband Greg; great-grandsons, Wyatt and Trent Eaton, all of Kingston; and a host of beloved nieces and nephews, extended family members and friends.
The family will receive friends from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Friday, July 11, in Highland View Church of Christ in Oak Ridge. The funeral will follow at 7:30 p.m. in the church, with Curtis McClane and Jeff Brown officiating. Burial and graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 12, at Oak Ridge Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to the Karns School of Preaching, 6612 Beaver Ridge Road, Knoxville, TN 37931 or the East Tennessee Children's Home, 2018 West Clinch Avenue, Knoxville, TN 37916.
